I have now purchased this full set from RosettaStone for two languages - Spanish and French - one of which I know pretty well, purchased it for brushing up, and the other (French) I don't know at all. I have now used it for 3 months and I am almost fluent in French at this point for everyday conversation needs. In Spanish, I have been able to improve and maintain my fluency level with the online sessions better than I had with a private tutor for a year. I am very surprised to see that so many people rate it so lowly because it certainly is a fantastic product. The thing is, like with any language product, it is only as good as you are willing to make it for yourself - you won't magically learn a new (and complicated!) language just by clicking slides and repeating. You do need to work at it, and then you will discover what a great aide this program is, not to mention it's fabulous online studio component which is an absolute must. If you are not using the online sessions, then you are only getting a small fraction of what you could out of it. I speak a total of 4 languages fluently and I will recommend this product heartily for a serious learner.

The Rosetta method immerses the student in the new language. In other words nothing is explained in your native language. It begins fairly easy showing sets of pictures with appropriate French words. In this manner you quickly learn to associate the correct French word for a few simple nouns like: man, woman, boy, girl, and a few verbs like: run, walk, eat, drink. This works well in the first "Unit" (there are 4 units in the first "Level", and each Unit consists of 4 "Core" lessons and there are many smaller focused lessons associated with each Core). By the second "Unit" things become a bit more difficult. The course begins to introduce less obvious concepts like pronouns and verb tenses. Still though, after comparing a few of the example pictures one can generally figure out the meaning of the French words they are using. I am now in the third Unit of the first Level and the course has become dramatically more difficult. I am concerned how difficult this will become as I progress to Levels 2, 3, 4, and 5. Still I believe this approach is better, more intuitive, than trying to memorize translations. Rosetta's approach gets you thinking in the new language, rather than thinking "how do I translate something".

Hands down, this is the best product there is for language learning, learning to think in french with this product is like discovering the world in a new language.

Contrary to all the hustles in the ads, there is just no quick way to learn a language. But some are better than others, and for my money, Rosetta Stone leads the pack. Read the reviews and see why.
