Overview

This publication is a complilation of the work of Fall 2008 Columbia University Architecture/Preservatiuon Joint Studio. Included is a short history of the development of Rotterdam after the 1940 German bombardment which left much of the historic center destroyed. Here are 11 student proposals for new development on the busy Coolsingel in the heart of Rotterdam. The challnge of the work is to present a design strategy that will compliment the city, and balance two monuments, Marcel Breuer's post war De Bijenkorf Department store, and a proposed muliti-use structure by OMA that presents an alternative to the typical skycraper.
