Royal Airs by Sharon Shinn

Master storyteller Sharon Shinn created the thrilling and enchanting world of Welce in her acclaimed novel Troubled Waters. Return with her to that elemental universe in this tale of secrecy, romance, and a battle for power…

Josetta is a princess of one of the Five Families. But she is far from the throne, so she is free to spend her days working in the poorest sections of the city.

Rafe Adova lives the life of a career gambler in those slums. He has no real ambition—until the night he helps a girl named Corene, who looks like she’s stumbled into the wrong bar.

Josetta is fascinated by the man who has helped her sister. Rafe is unlike anyone she’s encountered—someone seemingly devoid of elemental blessings.

Rafe is also drawn to Josetta, but when he is assaulted by foreign mercenaries and they discover the reason behind the attack, Rafe and Josetta realize that the truth could endanger not only their newfound love, but also their very lives…

I love this premise, this world Sharon has created. This is one of the fictional worlds I would love to step into for a vacation. From the plazas, the blessings, and changedays, to the more modern tech that is slowly being discovered. It is just so interesting and there are so many ways the stories can go! I was worried about Josetta being the lead female voice but I was pleasantly surprised. I feel a similar narrative in this book that I have seen in the Samaria books (with two perspectives switching back and forth). I have a no spoiler review policy, so let me say I thought I had it figured out halfway through and didn't, and I really enjoyed reading this book! Sharon, lets have a sweela or hunti next! It's very hard to find writers who blend realistic characters with alternate worlds. Sharon Quinn is an expert. The worlds she creates are full of life and mystery and imagination. Her characters are identifiable and her romances believable. She doesnt throw characters together in the heat of the moment and build a HEA. There are obsticles and real human emotions involved, though she is nice enough to give her characters a happy ending. In Royal Airs, Josetta takes center stage. Her story is one of struggle to maintain her life that she built away from the palace, and not be pulled in that direction again. Along the way, we meet new characters, who can stir hatred, and characters from the previous book that have a chance to grow and develop. It is full of intrigue, danger, and asks you to question what matters to you. In a sense, it is almost a coming of tale for those who received direction late in life with a touch of romance to bring me back for more of her books. I would glady recommend any of her books, but do not expect a light read. Expect to be swept away and your heart strings pulled. I cannot wait for the next installment of the series.
