"There was no black and white in my world. It was black or blacker. And I was the blackest of them all."

Xavier "X" Blood only remembers the last few years of his life.
Trained as an emotionless and deadly assassin, he goes through each day crossing out names on a never-ending list, not once asking why they deserve what he delivers. Death.
Then one day, his programming starts to unravel and it's all because of her.

Mercy Reid has a secret. A big one. The kind that will get her killed if it gets out.
Looking to get lost, she runs from one hopeless situation and falls into the clutches of a monster. A monster that was programmed by the worst of the worst to kill without remorse. A man who is looking for her.

When X is given his latest target, things become muddy. He knows his mark is right in front of his eyes, but he doesn't want to acknowledge it. He's literally losing his mind after all.
Will he defy his programming and save the woman who has made him feel again?
Or will he pull the trigger?

My first read by this author. It wasn't so bad, I rather liked it. The characters of both X and Mercy were both intriguing while also a bit disturbing. It's no secret that X is a broken man, it takes a strong willed woman like Mercy to get through his hard exterior, but their relationship is just so hard and filled with literally filled with pain, it's just disturbing to a certain point. So, while this first book doesn't necessarily end on a cliffhanger, as it tells the full story of how X and Mercy try super hard to get past all of their reservations and make a go of a somewhat 'normal' relationship, if you can call a hitman and a potential hitlady falling in love a relationship, this book does leave many unanswered questions regarding both X and Mercy. His past life, why Sykes murdered her entire family, etc... Overall, not a bad read at all...the unanswered questions is what threw me into not giving the book more than three stars. This could have easily been a five star full length novel, instead of three separate books dealing with the same two characters. I will eventually pick up the rest of the books in the series if only to see what eventually happens with X and Mercy and only because they don't end on cliffhangers...their saving grace! SR

A gifted copy was given in exchange for an honest review. (Indulgence Anthology) When you read this story, you enter in a dark world where you can’t trust anybody but yourself. I would have never chosen this book to read it as I’m not very much into BC’s club. Being part of this anthology, I decided to give it a try. It is the darkest book I’ve ever read, however I couldn’t put it aside. Both characters, X and Mercy kept taking me with them and I couldn’t find a way out till the end of the book.

It was a good read. It is kind of a twisted type of loved story.

This book was disturbingly wonderful. It seemed like the darker the story got the more the characters showed not only how f**ked up they are, but how much they truly were meant to meet.  X is so rough around the edges that Mercy knows she shouldn’t talk to him, but when she can’t help it and they touch the fireworks start as cliché’ as that sounds, Amity  Cross writes it in a way that you really have to read.  I found that X was written so well that I was thinking darn I don’t want to run into him in a dark place. Mercy wants to get lost and she finds out that X is the only way she is going to make that happen. There is some hot as heck parts of this book that just might make you need a cold shower.  Mercy’s world keeps remaking itself and the way the author shows us this is fantastic. I can’t help but wait and watch for book two to see how the story progresses.
