Prince Symon is a living weapon. Literally. His best friend, Lana, is also a blade shifter, his tutor is a bird shifter, and then his only brother is killed by fish shifters. Should he embrace animal shifter persecution like the rest of his kingdom?
Symon doesn't have time to decide. Someone is trying to kill him, and his magic blades won't be enough to save him. If he trusts the wrong people, he could start a war.
For generations, blade shifters have ruled commoners and animal shifters without trouble.

Reviewed by Janelle Fila for Readers' Favorite Royal Deception by Denae Christine is a young adult fantasy about characters who can change their body parts into weapons. Thirteen-year-old Prince Symon comes from a royal line of blade shifters, meaning he can shift his arms into swords. But when mermen kill his younger brother, his life changes. His parents are understandably overprotective. Nightmares foretell his death, too. And his kingdom is on the edge of a civil war. His uncle persecutes animal shifters but his tutor can shift his arms into wings. When Claur, a foreign rebel, targets Symon and Lana, his best friend, in an attempt to steal the throne, Symon isn't sure that his magic can save them. They must work together in order to save his kingdom. Symon must choose who he can trust, and who he should target with his sword arms. Royal Deception is a fun, fantasy adventure full of action, lies, magic, and deception. Denae Christine did a nice job of creating memorable characters with really cool and unique features like changing their arms into swords and feathers. That was the coolest premise ever and I was so excited that the characters lived up to my expectations. They were well written in depth, and I enjoyed diving into this story and this magical world. It was very well described and the author was so descriptive that I felt like I was there and could easily see everything.
It was fantastically well done. The characters were great, and the tension was high throughout. Young Symon has to deal with over-protective elders and has to decide the value of animal shifters, which are a different race. The country he is in does not accept animal shifters as being normal people, but rather a little more slave like. Thrown between these things and a terrible haunting nightmare, Symon travels through many trials.... and there is a horrible twist at the end leaving you on your toes! Above that there is also an adequate amount of humor mixed with scenes of fierce fighting and unexpected planning. And last but not least, the character development of the characters was high enough so that one could tell the thoughts of the characters in most situations and even sometimes predict what they were about to say. -Great job Denae!
