While working as a substitute teacher, I was given the job of administering a midterm exam to juniors in the English literature course. The regular teacher had advised me to bring something to do, because the test was going to take the entire time for the students to finish. I went to the school library and picked up this book to read. It was my introduction to McManus. Suddenly I burst out into uncontrolled laughing while reading one of the stories! The students looked at me in awe as I ran from the room into the court yard. I couldn't get it together for nearly 5 minutes! When I reintered the room, still giggling and with tears streaming down my face, I was asked to tell them what set me off. After the test was finished, I read them the story I had cracked up over. I was still unable to finish without bursts of laughter from myself and the class! The next week while subbing upper school again, i saw several students with a McManus book in with their classroom books. Now that is the sign of a great book!
