The path to Rules of Travel was a long and arduous one for Rosanne Cash. While recording the disc -- Cash's first album since 1996's 10 Song Demo -- she lost, and then regained, her voice. But it was worth the wait. Cash is in fine form on a collection of originals and cover tunes, with assistance from some talented friends. Sheryl Crow adds tantalizing harmonies to "Beautiful Pain," a barbed account of self-absorption, and Steve Earle trades verses with Cash on the erotically charged "I'll Change for You," a dialogue of obsession. Producer John Leventhal (Cash's husband) constructs impeccable sonic landscapes for these songs, ranging from the gently strummed acoustic guitars on "Western Wall" -- on which Cash whispers her deepest insecurities -- to the easy-rocking band arrangement, reminiscent of her 1984 hit "Hold On," that introduces "Closer than I Appear." A gentle, folk-flavored shuffle propels "Will You Remember Me," a meditation on mortality, but the same theme gets a more majestic treatment in the haunting "September when It Comes," which manifests the dread and delicacy of an Appalachian ballad, even when percussion and synth sneak in. Cash has never written more penetrating or more eloquent lyrics than these, which acknowledge physical ravages of time both seen and sensed. There are few more stunning moments than the entry of her father, Johnny Cash, who sings, with all the weight of his years and the toll taken, "I cannot be who I was then /And in a way, I never was." In a work of art with depth and heart to spare, Rosanne Cash doesn't pretend to be perfect or to have all the answers. Instead, she's a sympathetic traveling companion on a quest for truth.

I keep playing this CD over and over again. I was lucky enough to get a free ticket to see Rosanne's filming at Austin City Limits in May and was so impressed I bought the CD the next day. THe album features songs with artists such as SHeryl Crow, Steve Earl, Johnny Cash, Teddie Thompson. One song she does was written by Jacob Dylan. BUY THIS CD!
