{I apologize for failing to update this recently. Life happened. Again.}
Perry lay on the veterinarian's table, eyes closed. If I imagined, I could almost believe that he was asleep.
Phineas reaches out, petting him gently for the last time.
Perry's eyes opened a little bit and he chattered, the sound quiet and nearly inaudible.
"Hey, buddy," Phineas whispers, "it's... it's gonna be okay, right, buddy?"
Perry chattered again and tears filled Phineas's eyes.
Ferb, Vanessa, Linda, Lawrence, Candace, Jeremy, and Marie sat around the room, already having said their final goodbyes.
"We're gonna miss you, Perry," I whisper, stroking him gently, "say hey to Pinky for me, okay?"
He chattered again and, tears in my eyes, I sat down.
I bury my face in Phineas's shoulder, crying, and he wraps his arms around me, crying softly into my hair while protecting and comforting me.
Why did I ever doubt?
~-~
A sensation comes to me, a strange rushing to my head.
I know Phineas feels it, too, because when I look at him, he's holding his head.
At least we were back home, where we could just lay down if anything felt terribly painful.
"June 21... the Platypult..." he murmurs, looking at me suddenly, "another dimension... Perry was a secret agent... we saved both dimensions... our memories were erased... and you... you..."
"I kissed you," I whisper, shocked at this memory of ten-year-old me.
"That explains..."
I look at Phineas, curious.
"That explains the taste of strawberry lip balm on my lips the next day," he finished, clearly embarrassed.
I laugh, "I'm pretty shocked at the fact that I even did that, though. I was very hy when it came to big actions like that."
"I think you knew our memories were going to be erased, and you gathered up enough courage to do that right before we were done," he says, thoughtfully.
I nod before I feel another sensation for the first time ever: our son or daughter was kicking.
I let out a laugh after getting used to the initial shock.
I grab Phineas's hand, pressing it to my abdomen, letting him feel our baby.
He stares at our hands for a while before slowly raising his gaze to meet mine.
"Izzy..."
"Phineas..."
He grins, one of those goofy, contagious grins that makes everyone else want to smile with him.
He reaches up to take my head in his hand, kissing me.
The kicking stopped, but we stayed situated next to each other, staring at our Christmas tree.
"Summer," he whispers suddenly, and I turn to look at him.
"What?"
"The baby's gonna be here this summer, give or take, right? If it's a girl, we can name her Summer. Summer Joy, maybe?"
"I had an idea for a boy name, actually. Two middle names, but still. Juno Julius Augustus. Different takes on the three main months of summer."
We sit for a while longer.
"I like Juno Julius Augustus."
I smile to myself, "and I like Summer Joy."
At the sound of the name, I felt kicking again.
It's almost as if it were saying, "hey, I like that name."
I laugh out loud, because, despite the other things going on around us, there was a glimmer of hope.
