Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This 3 1/2 x 4 inch book contains 638 pages of facts, many of which are associated with a visual as well. You name the subject; art, astronomy, communications, physics, environment, history, music and so on are included in this fingertip version of a large encyclopedia. The contents are organized into sections about the world, countries of the world, history, science, the arts and the United States. Each of these sections has many subsections, of course. Easy reference is accessed by looking at the top of the pages for the section name, then each category under that is color coded on the sides. In addition, there is an index at the end of the book. It's not exactly convenient to carry around, but handy in your desk at home, office or school. The book is visually appealing to kids, as there is nothing more frustrating than looking up a word you know nothing about and not finding a picture to help in understanding. Not so in this little bundle of information. The science references are particularly interesting and elucidating. There are plenty of charts, timelines and topic boxes, enough for any information seeker. 2001 (orig. 1993), Running Press/HarperCollins, $9.95. Ages 8 up.
