Running Scared (Rarities Unlimited Series #2) by Elizabeth Lowell

Risa Sheridan knows everything there is to know about gold — its history, its secrets, its allure, its perils. Her boss, Shane Tannahill, is addicted to the stuff, having already made the precious metal the theme of his ultrasuccessful Las Vegas gambling establishment, the Golden Fleece. Now an ancient Celtic piece is being offered to Shane for his collection, and the casino owner is hooked. But though she shares Shane's enthusiasm, Risa is wary — because something about this particular artifact is troubling; something about it says "stay away."

It is a voice that should be heeded but is not. And the artifact is placing them at the center of an insidious plot in the mad whirl and blinding glitter of Las Vegas.

A remarkable novel of exhilarating thrills and passion, with unexpected twists and turns that will leave you breathless, Running Scared is another priceless example of why Elizabeth Lowell is the gold standard in contemporary suspense fiction.

Elizabeth Lowell fans know what to expect and they're not disappointed - it's an entertaining mix of suspense and romance in which good triumphs over every sort of evil machination and the gal gets a guy or vice versa. There's something comforting in knowing what you're in for when you open a book or listen to an audio version, and folks stand in line for Lowell. Experienced Broadway actress Maria Tucci gives a well paced reading, using the low registers of her voice for emphasis. She's a vet and it shows in this vocal performance. Set in Las Vegas and Arizona 'Running Scared' is a tale of gold, graft, and gumption. Risa Sheridan, is knowledgeable in the field of antiquities, more precisely gold. When casino owner Shane Tannahill is offered what he believes to be an ancient Celtic gold piece he can't wait to own it - perfect for showing off at an upcoming gallery event. However, Risa's not so sure about this gift from the Druids. She's even less sure as the body count mounts. Someone's out to destroy Shane and perhaps take out Risa with him. Lowell offers a mix of murder, thievery, and rivalry - everything to make a listener's heart beat faster. - Gail Cooke

At the time that I purchased this book, my 12th grade English class was studying the Anglo-Saxon Period (which goes in to Celtics, Druids and what-not) so it was a great way to relate and most facts stated in the book were the same ones we were learning in class. This is one of those stories that grabs you from the start. You could truly identify with the characters and the romance was an A+ (even in the oddest of places). Some of the action and romance were just crazy considering their current settings/situations and at first I doubted that the plot would even work but I was proven wrong. The woman can work wonders. The ending did come very quickly and left us in the shadows but all in all it was a great read!

I've enjoyed Lowells' books, but they always seem to die at the end. It seems like Lowell gets tired of the story and tries to wrap it up in 4 or 5 pages without really explaining all the plot scenarios. She never did explain who it was that Morrison murdered that Miranda was blackmailing him for all those years...or Miranda's part in the murder. In one sentence Risa says she's going to marry Shane....but no explanation of how that came about. One of the biggest plot twists was that the 'triad' or 'Red Phoenix' was going to set up Shane and thus eliminate him as competition in Vegas. I read and reread pages to make sure I hadn't missed anything....I didn't. It wasn't explained. She takes us thru 440 odd pages of suspense of 3 casino owner/mgrs plotting Shane's downfall of money laundering and we're all excited to see how he's going to get the best of these people.....and it dies......again. I was a bit disappointed.....again. I expected more from Lowell. I wish she would take the time with her endings that she does with the rest of it. I gave it 4 stars because up until the last 4-5 pages.....was a great read.

I'm a great fan and spent weeks looking forward to the books release, but.... This book is classified as a romance, but where was the romance. I didn't expect sappy dialogue, but I did expect for the main characters to talk and learn about each other through interaction, not background checks. Goodness the antagonists took up as much of the book as the main characters, with cameo appearances by old characters from other books. And as far as discribing this as a mystery/suspense everything was spelled out, no doubt of what was going to happen, just when it was going to happen. I realize that authors are under contract to produce books and schedules are important, but if the story doesn't measure up then printing it, especially in hardcover is a waste.

Once again, Elizabeth Lowell treats us to an incredible ride with twists and turns that keep you spellbound. The characters jump off the pages and leave you wanting more. Readers of Elizabeth Lowell will do well to check out Shade of the Maple by Kirk Martin. Yes, a guy, whose characters and story will leave you breathless and amazed. You will not be disappointed with either of these titles.

"Well, Opal, we got a lot of shopping done today!" Rarity said cheerfully. She was trotting to the room of were she was staying in Canterlot. Her grumpy cat, Opalessence, held most of her bags on his back. As she walks by a stand that was selling trips into the past, she thought about hat it would be like for her to go back in time. "If I had the choice to go back in time anywhere," Rarity said, talking to nopony in particular, "I would most certainly go back to when when my friends and I had that wonderful picnic wen we first became friends! That was the best time I'd had in ages. I'd love to relive it again." She then sighed. "But time travel isn't real, Rarity, so why think about it?" As she was about to step into her room, a voice behind her said, "Oh, time travel is most certainly possibe, madame." She turned around to see a brown stallion with a darker brown mane and tail. His cutie mark was an hour glass. "And who might you be?" Rarity asked. "I am Doctor Whooves," the brown stallion answered. "Who are you?" "I am Rarity," she answered him curtly. "So you said that time travel is possible. How?" "By using this." The Doctor showed her a blue Police Box standing behind him. "It's just a Police box," she told him. "It's a special Police Box," he informed her. "This is a TARDIS." "So it will enable me to go back in time?" Rarity asked, genuinely curious. "Certainly!" The Doctor said. "Oh, can I please try?" Rarity begged. "Sure!" The Doctor answered. "Just keep in mind that whatever you do in the past will change the future, even the slightest mistake could cause something big and horrible to happen now." Rarity nodded. "Also," he continued, "whenever you want to come back to the present, just find the Police Box and step into it. Now where to?" "To the picnic with my friends. I'm not sure of the exact date, however." "Very well." He led her inside and closed the door. It seemed to be spinning. All of a sudden, dizzyness overwelmed her and the whole world went black.- Hope you like! Please rate and review!
