One in the series "The Land, Peoples and Cultures" created by Bobbie Kalman, this edition focuses on Russia and, in particular, its environment and its culture, both old and new. Gorgeous color photographs and a map of this monumental commonwealth of states provide readers with a window into this corner of the world. The well-researched text does an excellent job of providing explanations of its long and complicated history as well as describing its unique physical attributes. Boxed facts provide readers additional information; however, the amazing photos present a picture window on this vast country and its people. It is a fine first look at a country that has been through many changes over the last twenty years and may be new to many upper elementary students' knowledge of the world. An extensive glossary and an index are included at the end of the book. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
