About the Author

"Fanny Fern" was Sara Payson Willis (1811-1872), whose father founded "The Youth's Companion" and whose brother was a prominent writer and editor. Escaping a bad second marriage, and with two children to support, Sara turned to writing and quickly became one of the most popular authors in 19th-century America.

Pat Pflieger received her PhD in American Studies from the University of Minnesota. She is the author of A Reference Guide to Modern Fantasy for Children (Greenwood Press) and a book on Beverly Cleary (Twayne Publishers). Her research on early American periodicals for children appears on her website at She's also the author of works for children, including The Fog's Net (Houghton Mifflin) and The House at the Edge of Time.
