I've always been fascinated by calligraphy and this book documents--from many vantage points--the intersection of calligraphy and spirituality.
Indispensable Guide & Reference Sacred Calligraphy of the East is an extremely comprehensive book, especially within this price range. John Stevens, renowned translator, Buddhist priest, curator of Zen exhibitions, and master of Akido, takes the reader on a tour of the history and spirit of Eastern Calligraphy. Stevens employs photos and diagrams to convey the theory, meaning, and artisanship of this mode of writing. However, this is more than a historical account or even a catalogue of examples—Stevens supplements the development and meaning of calligraphy with helpful practice exercises, so you too can involve yourself in this divine practice. My one reservation is that the topic of pronunciation gets little attention, but I suppose that could be another book entirely. All in all, this is an extremely thorough volume that examines the creation and significance of each letter with great care. Ideal for seasoned students of calligraphy in addition to the mildly curious (no prior knowledge of the language is necessary).
