Lincoln Marshall is a small-town deputy with a very big problem. Six members of his church have been found dead, killed by a rogue werewolf. He'll have to make a deal with the Devil to save victims that have gone missing -- maybe literally.

Elise Kavanagh, preternatural investigator and exorcist, is the expert when it comes to violent deaths at the jaws of evil. She's also the demon known as the Godslayer. Elise jumps at Lincoln's case, and it's not just because of his down-home charm. Someone's laid a trap for her in Northgate, and she wants to find out who.

She'll have to team up with Rylie Gresham, Alpha of the last surviving werewolf pack, to figure out who's trying to blame the murders on werewolves. Only together can they stop the killings -- and uncover the secrets buried in Northgate.

I had a very difficult time getting into this book. While it kept you on the edge your seat with suspense, I had to re-read like every other page because I felt as if I were missing so much. I still don't understand the Lucinda reference. Perhaps this wasn't truly the first book in this series and the questions the author never answered were clarified in earlier books. No idea. Doesn't interest me to find out.

Deputy Lincoln Marshall is a God-fearing man who wants to save his small town from a series of horrific murders.  Given the apparent supernatural origin of these crimes, he needs some special help, so he turns to Elise Kavanagh, who is uniquely qualified for this assignment.  Investigator of supernatural crimes, former exorcist and demon hunter, and gun for hire, Elise also happens to be a powerful demon.  When it appears that the murders may have been committed by werewolves, Elise goes on the hunt, but what she finds isn’t quite what she bargained for.  Old wounds from her past are re-opened as Elise has to decide whose side she is on and who she can trust. This is the first in a series.  The basic story line was promising, but I think the author tried to jam pack too much into this one book, and even too much into just one character.  While it’s clear that Elise was once human and is now a demon, there’s a lot of other stuff going on with her character.  Apparently she’s also Eve (as in Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden), and, oh, yeah, she killed God.  After a certain point I just stopped trying to figure it all out.   There are witches, demons, werewolves, angels, etc., which is great because I understand that an author has to build an entire world to populate the novels, but it was a little forced, almost as if the author was trying to capitalize on every aspect of urban fantasy that’s popular right now.  There are even zombies in this world.   I could see definite influences from Kim Harrison, for example, and her Hollows series, as well as book like Angelology.  And did anyone else laugh at the priest’s name—Mikhail Night?  (You have to be a child of the 80s and love Knight Rider to get it.)

I could not wait for this one to come out, loved the Descent series. Only one word comes to mind while I was reading and it was AMAZING! I love S.M. Reine's writing style, how she puts things together with angels, demons & werewolves and heaven & hell. A perfect way to keep me reading and wanting more. I was honored to receive a free copy from the author and it did not disappoint. I LOVED it. What is James up to, yes he is trying to reverse what has happened to Elise because he loves her but will he be able to save himself from her. Great job S.M. Reine and waiting impatiently for the next one! I haven't read Seasons of the Moon series yet, but I will.

I read the initial book in the Descent series when it was offered as a freebie from some site or another. Since then I haven't been able to put my reader down! I have enjoyed the Ascension series, and the Moon Called books that tie in with them, so much that I've given up more than a night or two's sleep while trying to finish each series. I grew up on Anne McCaffrey (yes, I'm old), Anne Rice, Robert Aspirin, Alan Dean Foster, Stephen King (until he became too tedious), Dean Koontz, etc. In the past decade plus, it's been Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, J.K. Rowling, more Anne/Todd McCaffrey, Lizzie Ford, and a lot of Indie authors. I definitely rate this series up with some of the better authors I've read. Other than minor editing errors, the flow is smooth, the characters are fleshed out nicely, and the story itself keeps you right on edge. I'm almost done with the Ascension series and will be sorry to reach the end . . .

I love this series! I love that there's everything I enjoy about a book in it. I am so excited that each of her characters from other series have continued on into this one.  I love Riley. I love the werewolves. I love Elise. I love her demon hunting team! I love where this went, because even if you haven't read any other book from any other series, you would still be ok to read this. BUT you should be reading everything she touches :)  So, Elise is our main character. She is a complicated being LOL I really don't want to give away spoilers, so I am going to try to be careful. She has a bad attitude, well, I actually like her attitude, but a lot of people will find her a little blunt. She kills demons. She has demon powers. She's smart, she's tough, she's definitely someone you should be scared of, and then, you can't out run her, so you might as well be on her side. She would be a fun friend! And with all of that, she has a heart, and a soft side, and compassion, and empathy. Hard to believe, but that's why I love her. She is one of the most complex characters I've ever read! She's my hero!  Lincoln is the sweet, good boy, by the book, deputy in a small town. He's asked for Elise's help, and holy crap, this opened the can of worms, and things just go nuts. I liked him, because those he comes off as the goody two shoes, he's inner monologue is AWESOME! It's the perfect guy thing, because they really do think about sex a lot, and even the good ones can't help themselves sometimes. And now, this starts the fall.  There are some seriously creepy people in here. The bad guys are gunna have your jaw dropping, and then you'll still be in shock with the ending. You get to see so many wonderful previous characters and you get to meet some new great ones. I wasn't a big fan of James in the beginning, and now, I know why, but I can't tell you. The wolves just have me, I love them. And you will be second guessing yourself at every moment. The mysteries and action had me completely glued to the page. I could not put this book down. I actually jumped right in to book two! It's a wonderful, action packed, mysterious ride of crazy! I love it, I want more, I need for it to be a continuous gimme gimme hahahaha :) I will stop now, because I have to figure out how To tell you about book 2 without spoilers :) 5 EXTREMELY AWESOME FANTASTIC ASS KICKING PAWS!

I have had the opportunity to read a few books by S.M. Reine, and I’ve enjoyed every one of them, but this is my favorite so far and one I will read again. Ms. Reine did a wonderful job of bringing Elise (Descent series) and Rylie (Cain Chronicles) together where each character left off in their own story to fight an evil that has caused extreme danger in both their worlds. But what I also liked is that you do not have to read either series to read this story. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially those who loves paranormal/urban fantasy. Elise knows a lot about death, especially when it comes from the hands of evil. When Lincoln Marshall, the deputy from a small town contacts her and explains that it looks like a rogue werewolf has been killing members from his church and that there are people missing she’s not sure if she believes him. But as soon as she learns the name of one of the missing is someone she knows has been dead for years she will agree to help him. Elise knows that this is a trap to get her to Northgate, but she is determined to find out who wants her so badly that they will use this one name to get her there. She will make contact with Rylie, the Alpha of the werewolf pack living in the area to see if her pack is involved in the murders. Together they will do what’s needed to get to the truth of the murders and fight the evil that is taking over the small town.
