Overview

The King of Jerusalem, Berenguela of Castille and Leon, Sir William Feilding, Richard Henry Lee, Carter Braxton, William Underwood, and John T. Jackson. What do they have in common? The answer: They are all ancestors of a simple, dowdy, white-haired Kentucky housewife, Mary Underwood. Rich in detail and excitement, the book is a collection of short biographies of Ms. Underwood's forebears--some well-known to history, some obscure, but nevertheless memorable characters all.Come along on a journey of discovery that would have astounded Mary Underwood (1902-1976) if she were still alive today. Perhaps, reading this little book, you will even be inspired to hunt for your own ancestors who lived somewhere across the mists of time.

About the Author

A college professor and historian who never taught history? That's Steven Powers Chylinski. For thirty plus years, he has researched his maternal ancestors in hot and dusty county courthouses, in attics and cellars of relatives, in small town libraries, and more recently on the Internet. Now he has put together a group of mini-biographies of 29 fascinating ancestors of his maternal grandmother, Mary Underwood.

Retired from teaching and living in a small town in northeastern Ohio, this amateur genealogist and researcher still patrols the aisles of his local library seeking clues about his long-since departed ancestors for the sheer fun of discovery. The search for one's roots never ends!
