The shipwreck that saved America.

In 1609, Salt was a scruffy, white alley cat looking for a new life. When he hears that the Sea Venture is sailing to the New World, he knows this is his chance. Life on the Sea Venture is full of fun and excitement, even though Salt has to deal with the aristocratic Angoras, the exclusive Feline Guild, and the territorial ship’s cats. But then a huge Tempest threatens to sink the ship.

The passengers labor for days to keep the ship afloat and Salt expects the ship to sink at any moment. But luckily they wreck off the island of Bermuda. The island holds many new adventures, but Salt is determined to get to the New World, so when the humans build two more boats, he joins them. They make it to the New World, but find a horror there that none of them expected.

Salt and the Sea Venture is a middle grade, historical fiction novel, suitable for children 8-12.

Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite Salt and the Sea Venture (American Felines Book 1) by Melissa L. Gill is the story of a white alley cat set in the 1600s. Salt gets on board the Sea Venture, takes one last look at London and sails to his new world. His life on the ship is adventurous and happy till a storm comes. The passengers work together to keep the ship afloat and, although they think it will sink, the ship finally reaches Bermuda. Salt has many adventures on the island but he still longs to go to the New World. Finally, the shipwrecked passengers build two new boats and they manage to reach their destination. A nautical theme is always fascinating for kids of all ages. These stories capture the many moods of the sea and set the tone for exciting adventures. Apart from the fear of being caught in a storm and escaping safely from it, the book is also interesting in many other ways. Their time in Bermuda where they are shipwrecked, and the adventures there, are as exciting as when they are sailing. The characters are all portrayed well and they are all unique in their own way, which gives the book a freshness. It is a good book for children as it exposes them to new places and ideas. The Facts from Salt and the Sea Venture at the end of the book is quite interesting. It throws more light on the characters, the society and the fauna and the flora of the story.
