I received an uncorrected proof for limited distribution copy. My review will be limited because of the uncorrected proof. This is my first Tom Young book and I am impressed beyond words. War stories is a tricky one to review because I am afraid to write down the wrong thing, I know for a fact the research that is needed to create a war novel takes numerous hours of detailed work. Personal firsthand experiences trying to put it to pen and paper, that takes guts. Just that alone is a tremendous task and by reading the wonderful storyline you created only signifies what a talented writer you are. Now I have to get the other books :D I was introduced to a rugged way of survival in rough terrains, sniper, various aircraft; C-130, C-5, T-6, Soviet MiG, American F-100 Super Sabre. I have no idea what these aircraft looks like. Don't forget the lentil mush, boiled lentils. The author descriptive narrative like the whines and hums of an airplane coming to life, I enjoyed it because it felt like I was there. From Gunny to Sadiq Kassam's terrorists, NATO, AFRICOM air ops, AWACS to the once minister to France, Jefferson. So much characters yet much needed to complete the story. Fantastic read, easy to follow and page after page of excitement, like watching a movie. Won this book on Goodreads, First Read Giveaway. Thank you, Darlene Cruz

Tom Young continues to produce a first class product that is written to start grabbing your attention within the first chapter. This is an author that is on my 'preferred' list and will probably remain so for a long, long time.

Sand and Fire, like each of Tom Young's fast-paced novels, gives an adrenaline-charged glimpse into the life of the modern warrior. Set in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Libya, these books provide both realistic combat scenarios and reflective, philosophical moments. I became a Tom Young fan when I read Mullah's Storm, and have gobbled up everything he has written since that one. The two main characters, Parsons and Gold, exemplify the best in our modern day Air Force and Army. The scenarios show U.S. soldiers' courage and mission focus, yet constant humanitarian outreach amidst horrific risks--all balanced with respect for the majority of the Afghan/Iraqui/Libyan people caught up in wars not of their making. Sgt. Major Blount, introduced in a previous book, is also a main character in Sand and Fire. He just can't bring himself to retire so re-ups for one last tour in Libya. The book chillingly describes two poison gas attacks and how our combat troops are trained and equipped to deal with these threats. Very realistic. Great plot and characters.
