Sanguis Jesu Christi: The Worship of Holy Blood in the Middle Ages

Listeners who take a college course or otherwise seek to get a basic acquaintance with plainchant may learn about the liturgical functions of chants or their melodic types. Equally important is the development of chant over its 1,000-year history (depending on where you start or stop counting), from oral tradition to notated body of musical knowledge to new creative forms. This release from the consistently high-quality early music label Christophorus, from Heidelberg, Germany, is an example of the last stage, containing medieval chants newly composed (around the end of the thirteenth century) and centered on a specific idea. That idea is the blood of the crucified Christ, and these chants were further connected to a specific Holy Blood relic supposed to have been first collected by Mary Magdalene. It made its way, through one of those intricate series of steps so beloved of medieval historians, to a Benedictine monastery in Weingarten, in Germany's Upper Swabia region, where it still resides today. Curiously, the reader of the booklet does not learn exactly what the relic is (a photo might have enhanced the effect of the whole), but one or more monks composed or adapted a set of Office chants to go with it, and these too are still sung on an annual Blutfreitag or Blood Friday. (No word on whether you can get grilled blood sausage at a stand outside to go with that.) For German speakers (see below), these offer a good way to get a grip on the styles of medieval chant. The chants include not only psalms and their antiphons and responsories, but also hymns, the quintessential medieval genre, in which a new devotional spirit flowered in simple rhymes. The other main feature of medieval monastic music was the development of polyphony, and that too is applied in these performances by the small male group Ordo Virtutum. The group chose an odd place to apply it -- it appears in the scripture readings, with the singers separating out to a parallel interval, chanting the text, and forming a simple cadence by making their way back to a unison at the end. This doesn't correspond to the body of existing manuscripts of early notated polyphony, but it does fit with later developments like organum, where it is the great effusions of commentary that get the polyphonic treatment. These manuscripts were newly edited, and the music has never been recorded before, making this a release of great interest for medieval specialists; it is also worthwhile for general listeners interested in medieval chant. The booklet notes are in German, English, and French, but the chant texts are given only in Latin and German.
