Glittery accents on the covers draw attention to a quartet of holiday-themed board books: Santa Claus and Christmas Angel, both by Laura Dollin, illus. by Rosalind Beardshaw, and Friendly Snowman and Santa's Reindeer, both by Catherine Schoolbred, illus. by Liz Pichon. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Shoolbred lists the way the reindeer get ready for Christmas. The cartoon style illustrations follow the text closely and have a flat appearance. The reindeer, whose antlers look like sticks stuck atop their heads, sit on stools and watch the elves make the toys. They frolic in the snow and practice taking off and flying. They eat hay at the trough. Finally, we see them pulling Santa's sleigh through the night sky. There are small circles of glitter on the cover that shimmer in the light and provide a tactile experience for young children. The language is ordinary and straightforward. There is no story here to capture one's imagination. 2003, Candlewick Press, Ages 6 mo. to 2.
