Being a mother is a time consuming job. Being a single mother is an all consuming job. Being a lock tender is an all consuming job. They work, usually non-stop, from 5 a.m. until sometimes as late as 9 p.m. six days a week. Try to do both jobs. No one knew how but Sarah was pulling it off, but pulling it off she was. Ever since her husband was crushed in the lock more than a year ago, Sarah has been maintaining both jobs. Of course, she has had help. Her mother-in-law has been living with Sarah and trying to help. Yet, it's obvious that she's loosing her vision and won't be able to handle the kids much longer. Sarah's dream? To get her children away from the canal. She doesn't want them to grow up without schooling, work dawn til dusk, nor be trapped in a life she fears. But how will she ever escape?

Liked the story of courage, strength and trust in God. Story of a young woman w/3 children who'd lost her husband and done man's job to support the family. And young man who'd had a chance to come from under the shadow of his father and to fulfill his own destiny.

This is the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal Series, and we now find Sarah a widow and mother of three young children. She is doing a man's job of physical labor in tending the Lock on the Lehigh Canal. She also makes bread to sell to the boatmen ...in her spare time. Sarah has always hated living on the water...she used to walk the mules for her father. When she married Sam she never thought she would be back, and definitely doesn't want her children to have any part of it. The way of life on the canal is of historical interest and in this book you see the writing on the wall that it is going to be coming to an end...the train will be taking over. I found this book to be an extremely fast read. Love the Christian aspect in this book, and how even tough Canal men find the Lord. I enjoyed the character of Elias, he is a kind, considerate, and Godly man. Loved his interaction with the children. I would recommend this book, although I did find parts to be predictable. Sarah's love and hobbies are well devined. Once you start the book you will not want to put it down until you finish the book.

As with the two prior books, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I only regret that this is the last of the series. From walking the mules, to marrying her husband, and raising their children, Sarah has encountered many obstacles in her life. As in the previous books, Sarah does prevail. I could not put this book down. I found myself holding my breath! I also found myself not blinking to not miss a single word! If you want a well-written story, not only is this the book, but the whole series!

I really enjoyed this last book in this series as much as I did the first two. I thought Elias showed a lot of bravery in leaving his secure job at the newspaper office to embark on this journey that he knew nothing about. Falling in love with Sarah was so warming and the children were so happy

I really enjoyed this last book in this series as much as I did the first two. I thought Elias showed a lot of bravery in leaving his secure job at the newspaper office to embark on this journey that he knew nothing about. Falling in love with Sarah was so warming and the children were so happy. Patrick was a good man but not suited for Sarah, I'm so glad it worked out for him in the end also. Elias won her heart from the beginning, it just took her a while to realize it.

The book kept me from putting it down. From the hardship of working on the canal as a young girl leading the mules, to the sudden marriage to Sam, to escape the work then the hardship after his death. She takes over the job of up opening the locks on the canal to let other boaters through the canal with loads of coal. She then falls in love with Elias who inherited his grandfather's boat and he takes over the job of loading coal. Throughout this time she is determined to never marry someone who works on the canals. Little does she know the Lord intervence and he opens up a newspaper office with a bakery attached. The book was a good end to the Leigh Canal series. Those that had not excepted God, before now had.
