No need for a long review here. This book was written by a professional soldier who was in the SAS, or the Special Air Service. For those not in the know, that's an elite unit of the British Army trained to carry out operations in ALL parts of the world. Eventually, the author became a survival instructor to the SAS, so you can be sure that this guy knows his stuff. The book covers all you'd ever want to know about the essentials of surviving in climates such as: the polar region, mountains, seashores, islands, tropical regions, or even at sea. Here's few of the many topics the book covers: -food, what you can and can't eat -animal tracking with numerous pics -color pics of edible plants -pictures of traps and how to trap things -how to handle animals you've killed for food -how to make a camp and various shelters -knot tying pics -first aid -color pics of medicinal plants -picures of dangerous/poisonous critters -things to have in a survival kit A very handy resource for anybody who enjoys outdoor/wilderness activities, it's just a darn good thing to have around in case of emergencies- or even just to look at the pictures! Also recommend "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff" if you have a shoulder problem that is interfering with your outdoor activities.

If you had to choose which reference book you would like to have with you in an emergency survival scenario, this should be your first choice. There are many books written about camping, first aid, orienteering, etc., but this book has it all. In one place, the reader can determine which native plants are edible, which snakes are poisonous, how to build a shelter, how to tie knots, how to read maps, build a fire, treat for snake bite, set a snare, signal for help, and a myriad of other essential procedures necessary for survival. The book addresses all of the most likely survival situations and some that may never occur. Even when the book discusses these unlikely survival scenarios, it reveals peripheral information that may be applicable to survival in the more likely situations. I especially like the use of color illustrations for the identification of edible and dangerous plants. This is one great book and likely the only book you'll need to bring with you as insurance when you don't know what to expect from the weather, the terrain and the wilderness.

I have skimmed several books on "survival" in the wilds, and this was the best overall. I purchased one for myself which I keep in my car, and recently purchased one for a friend who was recuperating in the hospital after surgery and liked to hike. It is an excellent resource for general survival skills if broken down away from immediate help, incuding first aid, water and food, rudimentary shelter, direction / orientation, weather, and similar. I highly recommend it.

I purchased this book for my eleven year old son who has thoroughly enjoyed it. He has used many of the ideas which include tracking and identifying animal paw prints, identifying plants, fungi and snakes, building animal traps and a bow and arrow. The book is packed with useful information. Though some of the chapters do not relate to our climate or environment, the information is still valuable and well presented.

Chock full of detailed information about facing ANY survival scenario you might ever encounter! Lots of easy-to-follow black and white illustrations, and color illustrations for the edible plants section. It covers use-what you-can-find situations (e.g. fire starting with sticks or building a shelter in a cave) to using advanced survival kit items. Seems like it covers just about everything!
