Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Funny and engaging, this is the story of a man named Albert who cannot pay for his new shoes. The village shoemaker permits Albert to keep the shoes on one condition: that Albert speaks only the word "Sausages" until he and the shoemaker meet again. Soon the whole town is convinced Albert is crazy. In the end, Albert finally gets to stop saying "Sausages," the crafty shoemaker gets his money, and the whole town learns a lesson. If not a direct adaptation, this has the feel of a classic folk tale, and like a folk tale, it is simple and satisfying. Though children might have liked it better had the author chosen to make some of the characters children, they will still appreciate Albert's conundrum and the tale's clever ending. The comic illustrations fit well with a text designed for early readers. 2004, Picture Window Books, Ages 4 to 8.
