“I walked away from him… but I left my heart behind.”

At eighteen, Lux shatters Sebastian’s heart – and breaks her own in the process.

When their paths cross again unexpectedly in New York City, Lux does her best to feign indifference toward her first love. But the harder she tries to hold Sebastian at arm’s length, the more determined he becomes to uncover the secrets she’s been keeping about their past… and the true reason she broke his heart seven years earlier.

She’s as much in love with him as ever; he’s just as furious at her for leaving. But beneath the anger, forbidden attraction still simmers… and it’s only a matter of time before it boils over.

When the past is finally unearthed, the monsters Lux spent seven years running from will finally catch up to her. And nothing – not even her love for Sebastian – will be enough to save her…

**SAY THE WORD is a steamy, suspenseful standalone contemporary romance for fans of action and angst. Due to sexual situations, adult language, violence, and thematic elements, it is intended for readers ages 16 and up.**

This was my first Julie Johnson book and since then I have made it my mission to read everything she's ever touched. It's been an enjoyable and slightly emotional mission. Laughing. Crying. All of it.

A young woman forced to break ties with her first love faces danger and heartbreak when she runs into him seven years later. Lux Kincaid writes for a glitzy NYC fashion magazine. It isn't her dream job, but it does pay the bills as  she searches for a more satisfying outlet for her skills. Her social life is limited to her best friends/co-workers Fae and Jamie. Romance? Forget it. She gave up that idea when she brutally ended  things with Sebastian "Bash" Covington. Then comes the day when she and Bash meet again. He's the award-winning photographer in charge of  a project celebrating the magazine's centenary. Needless to day, he's held a grudge. Forced to be at his  beck and call, Lux's life takes a turn for the dismal.  At the same time, a young girl Lux knows disappears. Lux investigates this on her own time and uncovers  a criminal conspiracy. When she gets too close to the major players, it starts to look like the next story she'll feature in is her own obituary.  The novel is set firmly in Lux's point of view. She has a strong voice that grabs you from page one and takes you on an emotional ride that will leave your head spinning and heart pounding. This is no swooning heroine. Lux may be broken in some ways, but she's smart and determined. She's also sensible enough to realize that her situation is unlikely to have a happy ending--professionally or personally. Bash isn't your stereotypical alpha-male. He's a real ball-buster at first, but you soon see this is due to a  tangle of resentment, confusion, and hurt. Even so, he knows that there's more to what happened between him and Lux than she's admitted to. He's as set on finding the truth as Lux is on hiding it. This conflict, combined with criminal case Lux and (through her) Bash get dragged into, keeps you turning pages. Add to this a cast of great secondary characters and you have one fantastic romantic suspense novel. There are a couple of weak points. The "Then" "Now" chapter jumps get tedious. Most of the "Then" sections are inessential to the plot and slow the pacing. Also, Bash's parents are over-the-top evil. I'm talking soap-opera villains. There's no subtlety to them. That's a shame, because the book as a whole is so believable you become immersed in its world.  Rough points aside, SAY THE WORD is one of the best romances I've read in a long time. It's definitely  on my re-read list.

What else can I say besides that I devoured this book? I flew through Say The Word without realizing it because Julie Johnson did such a good job at getting me to interested and invested SO quickly. I've never read anything by this author before, but I will definitely be seeking out more of her books after this.   This book is so much more than a romance, and I loved that. The added elements only enhanced the story. I never felt like it was crowded. Everything flowed really well. And the dialogue? Amazing.   I'm usually not a fan of love/hate relationships. But this one is so well done that I wasn't bothered by it at all. The relationship between Lux and Sebastian seemed authentic. I cannot comment on Lux's twin brother without being brought to tears again. It was a beautiful part of the story that I really loved.   If you're a fan of New Adult, I don't know why you haven't ordered this book yet. (If you have, high five.) It has everything that you expect from the genre and SO much more. As someone who's still discovering the New Adult genre, I can definitely say this book is perfect for those on the fence. It's a beautiful story that highlights Julie Johnson's talent and the potential of the New Adult genre. **I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to Book Enthusiast Promotions and Julie Johnson.

Can you call a book’s blurb the understatement of the year? Because seriously folks, the blurb for Say the Word does not even come close to conveying how much romance, action, intrigue and heartbreak can be found within its pages. I laughed. I cried (oh yes, you will want to keep the Kleenex box handy). I grieved. I cheered (Go Mrs. Patel!). I was shocked. I was exhilarated. I was scared. Most importantly, I fell in love…with Sebastian, Lux, Jamie, Simon, Fae and even Mrs. Patel.  Say the Word is so much more that a second chance romance. The blurb tells you that Lux breaks Bash’s heart, but it’s absolutely heart wrenching when you find out why. While I reasoned out part of the why long before the reveal, I was still be surprised when I learned all of the details. While it’s difficult to discuss a HUGE part of the storyline because of the romantic suspense aspect (can’t spoil the story for potential readers), the relationship development between Lux and Bash – both then and now – adds such depth and realism to the book that I became invested more and more with each scene. Although there may only be a few sex scenes, the sexual tension between Lux and Bash sizzles off the page and leaves the reader wanting more as these two together are explosive. Factor in the comic relief provided by Jamie, Simon, and Fae, it’s no wonder I practically devoured this book in less than a day.  Ms. Johnson has crafted a brilliant story that covers so many different genres there’s something to appeal to wide array of romance readers: contemporary romance, new adult romance, romantic suspense, mystery, thriller, action, and a second chance romance. I should note that Lux and Bash’s story is presented from Lux’s point of view and part of it is through flashbacks, which allows for a deliberately timed reveal of the details, but the author does it in such a way that I never felt lost or confused. If you’re a reader who prefers their books presented in a linear fashion and doesn’t do well with flashback scenes, you may not want to read this book … but you will be missing out on an excellent read if you skip it. Ms. Johnson is a talented writer and I look forward to reading more of her work.  I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.  Reviewed by Angela at Crystal's Many Reviewers!

Holy wow. I got an ARC copy of Say the Word and my lord am I happy I got a chance to read this book! Not only did I master it in a day but I now have a whole bunch of new additions to my "Quotes (mostly from books) That I Want Tattooed" list. I don't even know where to start. I wish I had the patience to find all the gifs that would help me express my love and enthusiasm for this book, but I dont. Because I just want to write this review and go read it again! After the love affair that I had with Like Gravity I was nervous and excited to jump into STW. And (as is now becoming the usual) I was suckered right into the world of Lux and Bash and spent my day reading furiously trying to find out what would happen next! I loved the interaction Lux had with her brother, her best friends, and best of all Bash. I found it all super sweet, funny, sexy in all the right spots, and all around relatable. I was a little skeptical of the whole "explores the dark underbelly of Manhattan" aspect of the story line (given the mainly romantic story line) but I thought that (despite a few slightly outlandish moments) Julie managed to make a work - which is rare for me to say, after growing up addicted to Nora Roberts romantic suspense books. With Say the Word Julie has cemented herself a spot on my favorite authors list (quite the feat, considering I read 3-4 books a week) after only two books. I can't wait to see what she has next. As I said with Like Gravity - I usually prefer stand-alone novels but these are characters that I definitely would not mind seeing more of (Fae and Conor sequel please!)

SAY THE WORD IS A MUST READ!!! 5 gorgeous stars -- for the colorful cast of supporting characters, for Julie Johnson's poignant writing style, for a strong female heroine, for second chances at love, and OF COURSE for the hero, Sebastian "Bash" Covington.
