Gary Roe and Cecil Murphy have written an inspiring and helpful book titled Saying Goodbye. If you are in the midst of losing a family member or close friend, this book will help you gain some perspective and become less uncomfortable with what is happening and how to deal with it. Having worked in a geriatric facility for some years, I had occasion to watch this process through varying degrees of involvement. From close personal experience, I sat regularly with my maternal grandmother during her battle with pancreatic cancer, and I was holding my mother's hand when she succumbed to colon cancer. The well chosen anecdotes in this book ring totally true. I've seen and heard much the same thing time and again with people in the process of leaving this world. When you have read these vignettes, there are four helpful lists at the back of the book: dos and don'ts, comforting yourself and family, accepting comfort from others, and a list of resources. If you are not now engaged in saying goodbye to someone you love, the chances are you will be at some time. When that time comes, you will be grateful to have read this book and to have kept it close at hand.
