Scarlet Pimpernel [Original Broadway Cast]

Scarlet Pimpernel [Original Broadway Cast]

In 1992, when it had its first recording, Frank Wildhorn and Nan Knighton's The Scarlet Pimpernel was a concept album vaguely based on the novels of Baroness Oczy, but without a real story and largely constructed as a star vehicle for Linda Eder. Nearly six years later, the cast album of the Broadway show (with a libretto by Knighton) that opened November 9, 1997, is a vast improvement. Six of the 15 vocal numbers have been cut and eight added, providing a much-needed balance of material by beefing up the parts of the villain and the Scarlet Pimpernel himself. The soft rock arrangements have been jettisoned, and there is more of the Les Miserables-like, convincingly theatrical style of original songs such as "Into the Fire" and "The Creation of Man." At the same time, the better ballads from the original, "You Are My Home" and "When I Look at You," have been retained. The singers are up to Wildhorn's rangy demands, even if Christine Andreas is inevitably less distinctive than Eder. The Scarlet Pimpernel still isn't a great work of music or theater, but now it's a legitimate, well-performed musical theater work. (In the fall of 1998, the Broadway production of The Scarlet Pimpernel was extensively revised, so this album may no longer represent it.)

I love this musical and I hope you do too. My all-time favorite songs would have to be: Vivez! The Riddle, Into the Fire and Madame Guillotine. The song "Madame Guillotine" is absoutly frightening. I love "Vivez!" because, its so beautiful. Christine Andreas, has the most beautiful voice I ever heard. Douglas Sills is the handsome heroic Sir Percy Blakeney! Terrence Mann is the evil Chauvelin. I've never seen this musical but its absoultly the best one. I also love the "Prayer" one. Its so amazingly well done by Douglas. He pours out everything he has. Go! Buy it now. don't waste time. Who knows how long this lovely soundtrack will last for. Unlike the musical on broadway I don't know if its touring but its gone on broadway.

I listened to this recording because I heard "storybook" and enjoyed it. I bought it because of Terrence Mann's stunning and powerful vocals. I have heard Rex Smith's rendition and there is no comparison. Terry is the Mann!

I love the movie and the book of the Scarlet Pimpernel, so I bought this CD, and I was amazed! The drama, melodies, lyrics, and singers are fantastic! Douglas Sills plays Sir Percy (aka The Scarlet Pimpernel), Christine Andreas is Marguerite, and Terrence Mann is Chauvelin. "Madame Guillotine" starts the musical off with a bang as the citizens of France sing of the justice of murdering the French aristocrats; "Believe" is sung by Percy and Marguerite when they are sharing their wedding vows; "Prayer" is a very powerful and emotional solo that Percy sings when he finds out that his wife is just like the rest of the blood-thirsty French (which of course is not true); "Into The Fire" shows the determination of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel; "When I Look At You" is sung by Marguerite who realizes she has lost her husband Percy's love; Chauvelin does such a wonderful job singing "Where's The Girl" that it makes your heart melt, even though he is the bad guy; Marguerite sings "Only Love" to try to win her husband's love back; and my very favorite, "She Was There" is sung by Percy when he finds out that Marguerite did not send St. Cyr to the Guillotine, and is in fact the woman that he fell in love with. Then there are the fun songs: "Vivez!", "The Scarlet Pimpernel", and the "The Creation of Man" that make you smile and sing along. The finished product is excellent! Each singer brings out their characters so well that it makes you feel as if you were in the middle of Revolutionary France in the 1700s. If you love the Scarlet Pimpernel, or musicals in general, get this CD! You won't be disappointed.

My school was the second in the nation to put on this musical, and it was GREAT! I didn't know the music at all before, but it is beautiful. Seriously, it's a great show, and if you have the opportunity to see it, go. You won't be sorry. My favorite songs are Madame Guillotine and Riddle. Chauvelin is an awesome character!

I was somewhat biased when I first heard about it, but being someone who loves Broadway and buying CD's, I just decided to get it. Frank Wildhorn's(Jekyll & Hyde, The Civil War) second musical is not only quite amusing but also chock full of gorgeous contemporary ballads which are easy to love. The storyline is based on Baroness Emmuska Orczy's famous classic ''The Scarlet Pimpernel'' about the outraged and heartbroken rich Englishman Percy Blakeney who with a group of friends, saves to-be victims of the slicing dicing guillotine in Revolution era France. No one, not even his French wife Marguerite who supposedly lied to Percy, knows who he is because in public circles he pretends to be a fop (a dandy, a fool, vain man). Marguerite is blackmailed by the murderous Chauvelin, and agent for the Revolution, for the identity of the Pimpernel, in exchange for her brother's life. Thus the story unravels. The role of Percy is played by Tony Award and Ovation award nominee Douglas Sills, who earned the Tony nomination for his role in ''Pimpernel''. The part of Chauvelin is played by Broadway legend baritone Terrence Mann, and the part of Marguerite is played by the lovely Christine Andreas. The lyrics by Nan Knighton are hilarious and poetic especially so in the main comedy number ''Creation of Man'', and when coupled with Wildhorn's unique writin style, you are in fo a treat, but that's not all.Sills not only brings out his comedic strength in this role but it is quite apparent in the cd, and his heartbrokeness is there, and his soaring beautiful voice is just icing on the cake. You just have to hear''Prayer'', ''Into the Fire'' and''Creation of Man''. T Mann's lavish baritone is perfect for the role of the ex-lover villain Chauvelin and one of his solo hits ''Where's the Girl?'' will have you in a trance like state. Andreas has one of the greatest soprano voices I've ever heard and when you hear her sing the top 40 hit duet from 1991 ''You Are My Home'' you will probably start crying. This show is highly comedic, intensely adventurous, extremely romantic, and over all superb and a treat for the ears. Fun fun fun!

After seeing the show and listening to the soundtrack, I became absolutley obsessed with this musical. It is my absolute favorite! The music is beautiful, the lyrics are powerful, and she show itself is just hillarious. Terry Mann is perfect for the role of Chauvelin, Christine Andreas has this uncontrolled vibrato, but Douglas Sills, where should I begin? He is absolutley amazaing! His voice is wonderfully captivating while he also brings his comedic talents into the songs. If you love musical theater as much as I do,this is one CD you NEED TO HAVE!!!

This is my favorite soundtrack. Douglas Sills, is one of a kind! His voice is amazing. These are my favorite songs that he sings on the soundtrack: Into the Fire The Creation of Man The Scarlet Pimpernel The Riddle & She Was There! Douglas is amazing I love his voice alot. I wish I saw him in SP. I've watched the movie but I've never seen the show or read the book. Sills is a perfect percy. He's a wonderful guy. He's the nicest guy I think I wish I could meet him in person. I never saw him except in NY on the Today Show. Wonderful Job Douglas.
