Overview

Scars (Time of Myths: Shapeshifter Sagas) by Natasha Brown

Myths come alive in the SHAPESHIFTER SAGAS. Standalone stories to intrigue and excite.

Five STRONG women.
Five MYTHICAL beasts.
Five EPIC love stories.

Along the breathtaking and unforgiving coast of Snæland, Ásta's ancestral farm is plagued with bad luck. The kinless maiden's turf walls continue to be found damaged, and there aren't enough farmhands to maintain the property. Claw marks in the dirt revive old memories of the wolf attack that left her scarred, and she begins to fear the whispers are true—that Fenrir, son of Loki and king of the wolves, has come to claim her.

Torin often leaves his uncle's farm in the southern hills to track and ensnare valuable gyrfalcons. His secret ability to turn into birds means his falconry skills are unparalleled, earning him precious silver. If the memory of his sister's death didn't haunt him daily, pushing him to numb his senses with drink, Torin might have married by now—as his uncle often reminds him. But the time has finally come to find a wife and settle down.

With bad luck biting at their heels, the scars from their past may seal their fate and put them in an early grave.

About the Author

Natasha Brown’s active imagination has always been a distraction. When she was a child, books read in the dark past bedtime ignited an excitement for literature. Once she started writing, she couldn’t break the habit. By day, Natasha’s an assistant teacher at an elementary school, and by night, she’s a book cover designer. Her weekends are spent writing and spending time with family, unless she’s not busy sleeping and dreaming up her next imaginary world.

Scars: Time of Myths is part of the Shapeshifter Sagas; however, it’s the first I’ve read. It’s also the first of Natasha Brown’s book I’ve read. This book is different from any shapeshifter book I’ve read. Its setting is unique, and the characters are living in another era. Once finished, I enjoyed the book; but not until I was over halfway through it. It was slow in the beginning, and I found myself confused throughout the book. I’m not sure if there wasn’t a sufficient amount of backstory of if there is another book I should have read first. I’ve never had this unsure feeling about a book before. Because of this, I have to give it 2 Boundless Stars “It was ok. It could have been better.” I did like it; it just took a LONG time to get there.

Scars captured me immediately, it wrapped itself around me and I literally felt as if I was there, standing as a spectator watching the daily life and events go by and I loved every minute. I loved the historical 10th century the story was set in, the way they lived, farmed, interacted with each other along with the traditions and myths. I loved all the characters and following their life so much so that I could have happily continued reading about them, I didn't want the story to end. The author wrote in such a way that I felt the heart of the story flowed off the pages and into the readers mind with the details and descriptions being so clear. Asta had become the head of the household and farm as her father and brother had died falling off the edge of a cliff the previous year. She is living hand to mouth and in serious debt but is determined to stay strong and not lose the farm her family had worked so hard to keep, even though something or someone else is determined to destroy the farm and her livelihood. Not only that her face was deeply scarred from a wolf attack years ago and claw marks have been found in the farms destruction, has the wolf now returned to claim her for good? Torin also found himself without his parents and lives with his uncle, he carries heavy guilt around with him on a daily basis. One escape Torin does have is that he can shapeshift into a bird form which gives him so much power and the ability to train Gryfalcons so well. Asta and Torin have both found themselves alone without their immediate families to look after them, events unfold and their marriage is arranged. They now find that they have each other, although both clueless to what a marriage entails, and a farm in need of saving. Will their joint forces be enough for the hidden darkness that lies beyond? I loved Astra's strength and determination to do her best no matter what. I loved Torin's loving, caring, deep, protective character. I realize that I've used the word 'loved' so much but that's how I feel about this book. This is a fantastic mixture of historical fiction, traditions/myths, shapeshifting fantasy, humor and romance from an author who I haven't read before but certainly will be from now on. Scars took me back to how I felt when I first became passionate about reading and I can't wait for more!

This is my first book by this author. I was very shocked on how well I really loved this book. It was absolutely beautiful. The Cover was beautiful, the words were very well written in this story. One of my favorites so far this year. The Author couldn't of picked a better setting for this book. Very well developed characters that you will fall in love with. Ásta was a strong character in this story and she does have some bad luck with things. Torin is a kind, patient loving person and I really liked about him. He was good for Ásta. I enjoyed reading about these two and what they had to face with everything together. This is a story I believe 18+ should read and if you want to read a good mystery, romance read this is for you. 5 stars I received a ARC of this book to give a honest review.

Ásta has recently lost her father and brother and is left to run the farm on her own. In this feudal society this is a rare thing and everyone thinks she will fail. Her own neighbor is chomping at the bit to take her family farm from her. With a mythical wolf roaming the hill side destroying her walls it seems as if she is destined to fail. This is one woman whom it seems fate has stacked all the cards against. Torin too has had his share of misfortunes in life. He too has lost his immediate family and feels that life is conspiring against him. I really liked seeing the joining of these two unfortunate people. Love may not have brought them together, but like any good Spring time story, love will conquer all!

Scars grabbed my attention from the start with what was going on at Ásta's farm. The situation is well described and left me wondering who is this wolf and will he come back. The rumors about the wolf attacks did not make things easier for Ásta. Ásta's bad luck progresses as the story goes on. I frequently worried what could happen to Ásta and her farm. She is a strong character who doesn't back away from responsibilities. I really liked Torin's character. Although he has his flaws with running from his past, he's patient and caring towards Ásta. Even when Ásta acts outside of the social norm, Torin doesn't hold it against her. He's determined to help protect the farm and Ásta from the wolf. There is much that Ásta and Torin must do to protect their land from those threatening to take their land and the wolf that destroys their property. I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

I read most of this book in one night. In one sitting. Literally, I read all but 2 chapters. I can’t pin point what I loved about this book – I really have no clue – but I got sucked in and could not put it down. I loved it. LOVED it. It has a mythological feel with slight shapeshifting with a touch of mystery and hint of romance. Asta has been haunted by bad luck that will not go away. She is on the verge of losing her farm – her family farm that she is in charge of – when her luck looks like it just might change. Except that part where she is haunted by bad luck. I think I was aware of the mystery from the beginning and wanted to see if I was correct. The romance aspect was very shaky and I wasn’t sure what was going to happen and wanted to follow that through. (I did not feel the content was “mature”, but to each their own.) This was a very easy read that pulls you in and doesn’t let go until it’s over!
