This visually attractive book has lots of photographs, drawings, other illustrations, and informational sidebars related to the American Civil War. While other books for young people on the subject that I have read often approach the War Between the States from some topical standpoint, often making it very difficult to understand the time line of the war, this book gives a year-by-year summary, beginning with a chapter "Before the War" explaining the background and causes that led up to the fighting, and then following with a chapter for each of the five years of the war, the last also talking about the aftermath of the war and its effects, thus providing a good chronological overview of the conflict. Major battles of each year are detailed, and there is a large map at the beginning showing the locations of these battles. The text is very readable. This would make an excellent resource for elementary students who are studying this period of American history and would even be beneficial for older students as well.
