Gr 9 Up-This book presents two articles each about several facets of the issue, one from the liberal viewpoint and the other from the conservative, and some written by widely known authorities. The author's credentials and a pr cis of the material introduce each piece, and the effects of media violence, bullying, and guns are some of the topics debated. The immaturity of the adolescent brain, an "it won't happen here" attitude, ignoring warning signs, and racial differences are also discussed. Subheads, and quotes set off in large italic type bordered above and below by bold lines, bring attention to the views being presented. This book is great for debate material or as a writing prompt for persuasive essays; however, although original issue dates (all post-Columbine) of the articles are footnoted, sources of statistics within them are not cited. This collection is for mature readers with the critical-thinking skills needed to understand and evaluate the material.-Marilyn Fairbanks, Azure IRC, Brockton High School, MA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
