School Ties by Tamsen Parker

From the USA Today bestselling author of the Compass Series, the teacher becomes the student in a tale of forbidden romance in the hallowed halls of an elite, all-boys boarding school...
Erin Brewster is nervous enough on her first day of teaching at Hawthorn Hill. But the way Zach Shepherd looks at her with his dark and dreamy blue eyes really throws her off her game. He simply has to walk past her to send her heart racing. Although he’s eighteen and a senior, he’s still just a student—and very off limits. To let her eyes linger over his body, to fulfill her fantasies would be more than inappropriate. It would be career suicide.
Three years after his graduation from Hawthorn, Shep has returned as a member of the faculty—and he hasn’t forgotten his favorite teacher, the prettiest woman he’s ever seen. When they finally have a chance to get to know each other, they realize they share a common interest: kink. In fact, Shep has learned a lot about the subject during his time away and is ready to teach Erin a thing or two. He’ll soon have her begging to be held after class.
As their relationship comes under scrutiny, the ties that bind Shep and Erin may begin to fray. But some bonds grow stronger under pressure...

Quick Summary: Erin Brewster begins to teach at a boys boarding school - Hawthorn Hill. She notices a certain student, Zach Shepard, and instantly sparks flash. Their eyes linger over the school year, and feelings flutter. Flash forward three years after Zach's grad, and here is he back to tempt Erin. They haven't forgotten each other, and soon enough they'll be begging for each other's company... Evaluations: I had no words when I first finished this novel. I had to wait a few days to even write this because my brain couldn't wrap around how Tamsen stepped her game up. Not only did she include her typical, hot, sexy BDSM time, but she added a flicker of forbidden romance as well? Tamsen is doing what most writers don't - she's growing!! And that makes my inner fangirl super happy and desperate to get her writing more! Or at least get her books more recognition!! The book was told in both Erin and Zach's point of view. This gave an added umph to the story since we got to see both of their thoughts and not just one. It opened up the readers to the thoughts of the characters, and we understood what was going on inside of their head. I typically don't like multiple POVs in past books, but in this story it fit perfectly! I also enjoyed the realistic aspects of the story - Erin starts a new job and actually feels self conscious! I can't list enough books where the characters are glowing and perfect the first day on the job. Every time I've done something new (new job, new school, etc) I am definitely not glowing with self confidence! Tamsen does a beautiful job showing this, and this makes Erin so much more relatable! The angst, drama and love in this story is just overall fantastic. Tamsen opens up more and explores! While there isn't as much crazy BDSM/sexy time like some of her past books, it's still great! Erin deals with drama before she meets Shep and that makes her grow as a character, so when the story finally progresses and we see more of adult Shep, we understand the struggles our main woman has dealt with. Overall, I loved it! It's a step up in the plot and character building department! Plot: Tamsen's plot building skills have definitely improved. While I love all of her old books (and their plots are uber sexy) there seemed to be more plot than sexy time in this novel! While I do love some great sex scenes, I love a wicked plot as well! Erin Brewster's troubles before Shep are a bit drawn out and I wanted more Zach in those scenes, but it gave a beautiful insight into the character. We saw her struggles and into her mind. I liked understanding her instead of just sex scene after sex scene. To me, it made her more relatable than Tamsen's past characters. I felt for Erin and I understood how she saw the world. When we got to Zach's scenes, I felt like it was a little to late. I kept yearning and yearning for Zach and Erin to have some kind of fling or flirty scene before he left, but it didn't happen. Yet Tamsen didn't disappoint! When Zach was brought back, the sex scenes were super sexy and hot. The long, drawn out wait made those scenes even better. When Zach explains his life in a sex club (and how he's a virgin? That was a strange twist) I wanted to read more about it. I wanted to see maybe a flash back chapter or an insight into that part of his memory. His explanations were so interesting, and I felt like his back story could have been a novel all on it's own!!

Erin is twenty two and is a teacher in an all boys boarding school. Zach is in her homeroom. Erin notices Zach/Shep and he notices her and Zach thinks about Erin when he is at his campus library job. Will another teacher is at the faculty get together at the headmaster’s home and walks over to talk to Erin. Erin had come to this school to follow in her grandfathers shoes. Although Erin’s grandfather was considered a legend by many. Will asked Erin if she would like to go for a walk and she leads him out the back way. Erin had grown up on the hill as she spent spring break and Christmas with her grandfather here and Erin had loved it as she didn’t have the wonderlust her dad had to his disappointment. Will and Erin walked to a building and when inside Will tried to push Erin way to fastthen when she stopped him Will did not bother to walk Erin home. Erin watched over a studyhall in the evening that you had to get a pass to be able to attend. And the students worked on different art projects. And Shep was in this study hall and he always waited until the end of the evening so when Erin closed up at eleven thirty pm he was there and walked her home. Shep looked forward to that time. For some reason Erin’s trasition into the school was easier then she thought it would be but she also beleived some how it had something to do with Shep. Erin also felt safe around Shep. This was an excellant romance and I loved it. The plot was great and the story was very well writen. I became hooked to the story from the beginning and didn’t want to put this down. It kept my interest until the last page. I loved the characters they were absolutely awesome. There was some bondage and a slight S and M bite to it but nothing really bad in this. I loved the ins and outs of this story and I highly recommend.

School Ties takes a teacher/student trope and adds some interesting (and kinky!) twists in this new story by Tamsen Parker. It stars Erin, a 22 year old teacher and her new charge, 18 year old Zach. The story shows how they meet, and then later, their relationship when Zach becomes a teacher at the same school. I had some mixed feelings about this story. On the plus side, I liked the Zach that we are first introduced to as a student. He’s a caring and considerate fellow, a little quiet which goes well with his artistic nature, and quite sweet really. Unlike the other boys at the school he is there on a scholarship and comes from a disadvantaged family, so he’s had to work harder than his peers to be there. He knows his crush on Erin can’t be returned, but it doesn’t stop him from paying attention to her, and being aware of her when she’s around. The ‘forbidden’ aspect of their story is muted by the fact that there really isn’t a big age difference between them (and he is already 18) but still makes for a tense time in the first several chapters (which I’ll admit, went on longer than I expected) where you wonder if they will or won’t do something and get caught at it. Erin makes some decisions in the first part of the story that impact her life and Zach’s as a result. I can’t say I agree with the decisions she makes (and I don’t want to give away spoilers) but I think it’s important to remember her young age, and how much her place at the school means to her as it affects her choices. When Zach graduates and goes off to college, we have a brief interlude where we find out that while he was getting his advanced degrees, he had a part time job at a fetish club which is where he learned about his dominant nature. I wish we’d seen more of this time in his life, but it’s brief and next thing you know, he’s come back to Hawthorn Hill, this time for a teaching position. The truth is that he’s never forgotten Erin and is hoping that she’ll still be there. But he gets cold feet upon their first meeting as full members of the faculty, when he realizes that she might be turned off by his sexual proclivities. So he goes from being the kind, sweet young man we first met to a cold and standoffish one, much to Erin’s confusion. Eventually though, they get the chance to have some alone time together where Zach reveals his secrets and discovers that Erin would be interested in exploring a sexual relationship with him. The kink is fairly standard as far as BDSM goes, nothing too outlandish, but definitely makes for some steamy scenes between them. The friendship they had established before is gone, but in its place blossoms a new and better relationship that leads to a happy ending for them both. If you like forbidden relationship stories that aren’t too edgy, and some kink with your romance, you’ll enjoy this one. 3.5 stars.

Erin begins her teaching career at Hawthorn Hill a prestigious all-boys boarding school. There she meets senior Zach Shepherd. She is attracted to Shep but knows that he is off limits. Moving a few years down the road and Shep is back at the school, this time as a teaching and while away Shep has learned more about himself. Both Erin and Shep have a lot of baggage and drama, however their chemistry is hot. I liked the story as well as the character is was a good steamy read.

School Ties,  Tamsen Parker Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews Genre:  Romance,     I loved Tamsen’s Compass series, once I really got to know the characters. This time its less intense BDSM and more forbidden romance. Well – forbidden as far as teacher/student goes. It must be a difficult scenario when teachers are only a few years older than those they are teaching, and if they met in a club, pub, via friends or something it would be fine, but put in the teacher/student bias and its not. Its a far cry having people with just four years between them as Erin and Shep do, to a teacher that's in thirties or forties carefully grooming a 12 or 13 year old.   So Erin’s back at her beloved aunt and uncle’s school, as a teacher. Its where she feels at home, where she’s wanted to be all along and its her dream job. First day of teaching a student catches her eye – and its Shep. He’s seems to be attracted to her too, but its a road they can’t travel and both determinedly avoid it though we can still feel that tension between them, can see in Shep’s art how he feels about Erin. There are a few incidences that show just how strong they feel about each other, nothing actually happens but the intensity of what goes on when they meet in innocent situations is there. Fast forward 4 years – things have changed for both of them. Erin’s been married and divorced, and her husband’s attitude has sapped much of the confidence she had, made her feel she wasn’t good enough. Shep comes back to the school, as a teacher and they begin a tentative relationship, but they struggle with some things, Erin’s worry over being good enough, her ex cheated on her and though she didn’t love him it still hurt, and Shep’s home situation, that wasn’t good and he wants to give his younger brother the chance at Hawthorn that he had. I loved Shep and Erin, but the story was a little – meh...seemed to drag a bit, long periods of nothing really happening. I guess after the drama and intensity of Compass I was expecting ore of the same and it isn’t. Still, that's down to me and false expectations, this is marketed as simple romance. Maybe it was the air of forbidden romance along with the earlier books that made me expect a story that would be deep, where there were real dangers if their romance was discovered, but in fact for the first half or there about they don’t do more than exchange a few looks, think about how the other is feeling, have occasional innocuous conversations and it just felt a little slow for me.   Its a well written story, great characters but I just felt there wasn’t really much going on.       Stars: Three, a good read, just not a great one for me. School Ties by Tamsen Parker....This is a no no, student and teacher romance, but it was a yes yes for me. Tamsen Parker has written a wonderful story that is tasteful and enjoyable. I loved the characters Erin and Shep, wow do they have hot chemistry. This is my first book by Tamsen Parker and she has won a new reader. I was given a complimentary book by publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.

This is my first read by Tamsen Parker. I can easily tell she’s a gifted writer. I enjoyed the story but I didn’t like the heroine. Erin was weak and let people walk all over her. Her character worked with the storyline but I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to shake Erin to wake her up. She had a good childhood, education and got her dream job, but couldn’t seem to stand up for herself as much as I thought she should. This made it very difficult to relate to or respect her. Shep was strong and very sexy. How he loved Erin all those years he was away at college and then applied for a job back at the same school she works at was SO romantic! Shep kept me engaged and had me deeply invested in the story. I just I wished the heroine had more backbone. ***I want to thank the publisher for generously gifting me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own***
