First of all, what a program! You have your grand Schubert's Ninth, followed by a wild rendition of the Rite of Spring. It's a complete about face. As for the conductor Zubin Mehta, he is known for his flamboyant interpetations for Mahler, Strauss, Wagner and Strawinsky. Surprising, his Ninth of Schubert is grand and beliveable, if not "showy." The Rite of Spring sounds more difficult in the hands of an American orchestra...say, the New York Philharmonic, but nonetheless, the Vienna Philharmonic meets the odds and play their hearts out. Known for its barbarism, however, this Rite of Spring is more "ballet-like", which I think can be more interesting than the average "loud and straight forward" interpetation. All in all a great performance, this remains a favorite of mine and can perhaps be yours!
