Overview

Schumann has always been one of Maurizio Pollini's specialties -- if a pianist with such a broad repertoire can be said to have any specialty at all. His recordings of the Symphonic Etudes and Fantasy are justly famous, and these newer performances of the Davidsbündlertänze and the rarely-heard Concert sans orchestre (Sonata No. 3) are equally impressive. Pollini, being an intellectually curious musician, has carefully selected early editions of both works, which makes for fascinating listening -- especially in the case of the latter piece, which is usually played (when it is played at all) in a later revision. In the Davidsbündlertänze, he strongly delineates the music's opposing characters, giving the exuberant movements an electric jolt of energy and thus rendering the quieter sections less languid than usual. The Concert sans orchestre is a revelation in Pollini's hands -- the first movement tormented, the finale an exquisite whirlwind of passion and hope. It makes a fascinating comparison with the classic recording by Horowitz of the later version (available in Philips's Great Pianists of the Century series). Not just for Pollini fans.
