Britt and Bella love living near the beach. But the normal fun in the sun doesn't compare to the wonder of discovering a nesting sea turtle. When the girls learn that the sea turtle and her eggs could be in danger from a sand sweeper machine, they try their best to protect their new turtle friend. Standing up to rude workers and showing courage beyond their years comes naturally to the girls as they find a reason to be brave. Sea Turtle Summer by Nancy Stewart is a delightful children's book. I loved the friendship and courage of Britt and Bella. The story is engaging and the illustrations by Samantha Bell are soft, yet colorful. The message about the importance of protecting these beautiful sea creatures is certainly worthy of attention. Included at the end of the book is a list of information about sea turtles that I found interesting. The information complements the story and can provide a launching point for discussion with older children.Sea Turtle Summer is recommended for ages 6 to 9, but I think children as young as 3 or 4 would enjoy the story and illustrations.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free as part of the PumpUpYourBook Blog Tour. Bella and Britt are friends who like to walk along the beach. One day they came across a beautiful Loggerhead sea turtle laying her eggs. Eager to protect the turtles nest the girls want to stand guard but they know the ranger could help. When they arrive at the ranger station he is not there. He won't be back until the next morning. The girls create a protected area by surrounding the nest with driftwood. The next day Bella and Britt check on the nest. When the sand cleaner shows up to clean the beach for a volleyball tournament the girls panic. How will the girls save the nest? Will the ranger arrive in time to help them?Stewart shares a wonderful story about a Loggerhead turtle. Young readers will learn all about these very special turtles and why they lay over 100 ping-pong sized eggs. The beautiful water colored illustrations will have kids lingering on the pages and longing to visit the beach themselves. Parents and teachers can use this book as a guide to teach kids amazing turtle facts. Kids can also research other creatures that live on or around the beach.

As a newcomer to Nancy Stewart’s Bella and Britt series, I enjoyed Sea Turtle Summer without having first read One Pelican at a Time. Being an environmentalist, beach lover, and teacher myself, I was impressed with how passionate the two friends are in appreciating and caring for their beach “home” and its marine life. Scientific information on sea turtles at the back of the book will give students, teachers, and parents more food for thought. While savoring a walk on the beach, Bella and Britt witness the rare occurrence of a sea turtle laying her eggs in daylight. Knowing the sea turtle’s nest will need protection, the two girls hurry to the ranger station. However, the ranger went home sick and now the girls must look after the turtle’s nest on their own. Bella and Britt’s determination to save the sea turtle’s eggs will help inspire other children to safeguard the natural wonders and wildlife in their own locales. The wonderful watercolor artwork by Samantha Bell is the right mix of realism and seeing the world through a child’s eyes. One can feel the sand underfoot and between toes, and experience the waves slipping to shore beneath the rolling dunes. It’s magical and carries the reader from page to page along with Bella and Britt on their mission. Sea Turtle Summer is a pleasurable read with the timeless message of sticking to your principles and using all resources at hand to accomplish an important goal. Bella and Britt are strong and courageous in confronting the obstacles to protecting the sea turtle’s eggs. At the end of the story you wonder what adventures the girls will have next and you want to be right there with them.

Reviewed by Molly E. for Readers Favorite First, I want to say that the cover of this story is awesome. It is eye catching, and really fits the story perfectly. Secondly, I want to say that I really enjoyed this book. It is a children's book but the story is well-written and kept me intriguing until the end. I have two young sons, aged 9 and 7, and they both enjoyed me reading this story to them. "Sea Turtle Summer" is filled with fun and learning. With the help of Britt and Bella, the author shows the reader the importance of Turtles laying their eggs and having them protected from all things. The reader gets to journey alongside the girls, and learn all the things that can happen after a turtle lays her eggs and the things that can harm them. It is a fun experience to read through a book and see the delight on children's faces when they are learning something new, especially when my kids already have a fascination with turtles. The illustrations by Samantha Bell that follow this story are awesome. They are a perfect fit for the story line and are most definitely eye catching. They portrayed the sea turtle, the beach, Bella and Britt beautifully. Samantha Bell has great talent. If you are looking for an educational tool for your children that will hold their attention, this is definitely a great book to have. Whether you're looking for it for the home, the library, or school, this book will work its way into the heart of any young child. Nancy Stewart is a fantastically talented children's book author and I am looking forward to reading more stories like this one, both for myself and my children.

Sea Turtle Summer is a cute and informative book about two determined children who go to great lengths to save a nest of sea turtle eggs. Bella and Britt see a sea turtle laying its eggs in the sand. They try to inform the park ranger, but are told that the ranger is ill and won't be able to protect the nest. They decide to get up early in the morning to keep the sand sweeper and volleyball nets from damaging the fragile nest and eggs. I enjoyed reading this book with my 3yr old and 7yr old daughters. We really enjoyed the pictures and the story of two young children doing what they felt was right to protect the precious life of the unhatched turtles. This book is a wonderful example of determination, helping others and protecting life. Not only is it a cute story by informative as well. A wonderful read for any child! *I received a free copy of this book in hopes that I would post a review on my blog. Regardless I only promote those books I feel would be a great read for myself, my family and friends/followers. This book is definitely a good read!
