I purchased this book sometime after 9/11 (about a year)and trained my own SAR Dog with it. This book is to search and rescue as the bible is to christianity. this has to be the best book on the subject i have ever read. it covers the basics of nearly every airscenting operation you may want to include: evidence, cadaver, disaster, wilderness airscenting, and even water search. This is just a really incredible book and with some 4 years in SAR, I wold recomend this book to everyone who is interested in the subject. It does not cover tracking or trailing, but still teaches many great skills that every tracking and trailing dog should have.

Until you have a real-life experience it might be hard to appreciate the brave and lethal jobs these dogs have to do. From apprehending crimminals to rescuing debris covered people after a natural disaster, these dogs are the front line. The amazing part is, these dogs complete these tasks just by their acute sense of smell (which is about 1,000 times better than humans and is the sense they use first, followed by sight and hearing.) Normally, when getting trained they are subjected to many scenarios which feels like games to them. That means when out on the field, all of this mostly feels like games. These dogs are exposed to many dangers, one being a story I know about a time when a K-9 unit was dispatched to help at a scene. The dog and the officer found the crimminal, which deciding to defend himself from getting bit, actually stabbed the dog 15 times. Both the dog and the officer recovered fully from this attack, and the dog able to go back to work in about three months. That shows the amazing power of these dogs.
