Second Debt (Indebted, #3) by Pepper Winters

The Third Book in the New York Times Bestselling Series.

“I tried to play a game. I tried to wield deceit as perfectly as the Hawks. But when I thought I was winning, I wasn’t. Jethro isn’t what he seems—he’s the master of duplicity. However, I refuse to let him annihilate me further.”

Nila Weaver has grown from naïve seamstress to full-blown fighter. Every humdrum object is her arsenal, and sex…sex is her greatest weapon of all.
She’s paid the First Debt. She’ll probably pay more.
But she has no intention of letting the Hawks win.

Jethro Hawk has found more than a worthy adversary in Nila—he’s found the woman who could destroy him. There’s a fine line between hatred and love, and an even finer path between fear and respect.
The fate of his house rests on his shoulders, but no matter how much ice lives inside his heart, Nila flames too bright to be extinguished.

Can't wait to read the rest. I hate waiting for long on these authors who can't write a whole book any more. Since Fifty Shades, its seems everyone wants to out do that author by writing 6 or 8 short books, that would be better as a whole book. This series in particular would be a great book completed as one.

Pepper Winters I don't remember giving you permission to rip my heart out. Yet, that is exactly what this book has done. Jethro and Nila are back. Some secrets have been revealed, some more a unanswered and there is more heartache than one reader should be able to handle. Yes despite that heartache, Jethro and Nila have wormed there way deeper into my heart and I can't stand but to watch them succeed. The Second Debt is to be paid, and along with that comes more raging. I have not hated a character as much as I hate Cut, Daniel and Bonnie in this book. They are completely nonredeemable. So, you'd think Jethro would be lumped in with them, since he's the first born of this horrid family. Not so much. Second Debt showed even more of Jethro's redeeming side that we hadn't seen fully until now.  I ache for this man. For what he's been through, his fate having been decided from faults of decades past. When coupled with Nila, they are a couple doomed to repeat the past.  Although, despite the mar on both their souls they've be able to keep part of their humanity intact. That humanity has since fostered into lust, and irrevocable yet destructive love. Nila and Jethro are fighting against the odds, allowing the hurt they must wage on one another to ironically solidly their relationship even more. It's a veritable sh*tstorm waiting to happen. And just when it's about to come to fruition, and you think something jaw-dropping is going to be revealed, something else mind blowing happens to open up even more questions and riddles.  Second Debt left me breathless and dying for more. I am 100% invested in Nila and Jethro's dark and twisty future. I also have to thank Pepper Winters. She makes it okay to indulge in the wicked reads. Things that happen in this book, if spoken aloud seem to be a turn-off, but when you're sucked into the words of seduction and danger, it's spellbinding and awe-inspiring. She's brought a new level of enjoyment to my reading with the Indebted series, and I'll be waiting fury in one hand and tissues in another to visit this corrupt and beautiful world again.  Happy Reading! *ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest  review*

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Curse word! Curse Word! CURSE WORD!!! Even knowing that Second Debt ended on a cliffhanger was not enough to prepare me for the way in which events unfolded. Honestly, I don’t even know what to say about this book except that I am in awe of the fact that Ms. Winters is able to one-up herself with each installment. The story just keeps getting better as we have the unveiling of macabre history of the Weavers and Hawks intertwined with the developing relationship between Nila and Jethro.  While much occurs before the second debt is extracted, I can’t really talk about it as this series builds with each respective book and makes the discussion of specific facts ripe for revealing spoilers. That said, I found myself both fascinated and horrified by the revelation of what act the Weavers inflicted upon the Hawks that led to the development of the Second Debt. Honestly I can understand why the first and even the second generation of Hawks demanded the debts. The need for vengeance would be ripe, possibly even enough for the third generation to still demand it. But I found Bonnie Hawks’s actions toward Nila disturbing – believable, as I suspect that madness truly does run through the family – but disturbing nonetheless. As for the act that is undertaken to extract the second debt, Ms. Winters you scare me with how realistic your writing is. I felt like I was right there with Nila, suffering the same fate as the previous Weaver women right along with her. I blame you for disturbing my dreams tonight because I know it’s coming,  I am reluctant to call Nila and Jethro’s story a romance because it’s not. There is no romance between Nila and Jethro – their family history and situation doesn’t allow for it, forbids it actually. But it is a love story. While we have seen hints of it in the previous books, Second Debt proves to be pivotal in the shaping of their relationship. The physical aspect of their relationship definitely intensified and if there were ever a case of pregnancy by Kindle, this is it. Nila never stood a chance against Jethro. But seriously, their sexual chemistry is the bonus because their souls are so entwined and it quickly seems to becoming a case of them against the world. I cannot wait for the Third Debt to find out what happens next and to find out if my suspicion about Jethro’s “disease” is correct. A Superbly Written, Intensely Dark Romance!  5+ Twisted, Ominous Stars! Five stars just isn’t enough. There is raw, wounding emotion in this book. Jethro and Nila flip back and forth many times during the first half, convinced they both loathe and care for the other. Then about midway of the book, things explode and it’s an out of control tilt-a-whirl going up and down, round and round and not stopping until the last sentence. And then right when you think things might start to turn in their favor, it leaves you breathless thinking, this can’t be how it ends! Thankfully, it’s not. It’s just a massive cliffy and one that’s sure to keep me awake at night trying to figure out how this is all going play out. Love and passion have absolutely no place in the circumstances Pepper Winters has spun for the main characters in this dark series but that’s precisely what she’s given us. She’s taken two extraordinary characters and placed them in insurmountable odds where cruelty and vileness run rampant and she’s filtered in love, acceptance and understanding... even forgiveness and we find the light in the dark. It take true talent to accomplish that and keep you cheering for the heroine who’s one step away from giving up and the male lead who is more anti hero than hero. I absolutely love Jethro and I love Nila. Their story is gut wrenching at the best of times and at the worst, it’s down right terrifying and disturbing and absolutely magnificent. I was still cheering for Jethro even when he was encased in his “ice”. This book is intense and compelling and I just Couldn’t. Put. It. Down! So, so good! And the heat? Yeah, Jethro and Nila were so steamy-sexy together, even in the midst of all the was going on around them, their passion was scorching hot as they lost their souls in one another. This author can write one hell of a sex scene!! *fans self* Now lets talk about the writing! This author just gets better and better with every book. She can make me feel with the exquisite beauty of her words. She can paint a picture so distinct, so disturbing, so vividly imposing and mind blowing, it leaves me in awe. In one part of this book, I literally had chills when Nila was paying the second debt. I felt like I was right there beside her, enduring it all. It’s poetic beauty! The Wrap Up: I am aching to get the next book in this series. I HAVE to know what’s next for Jethro and Nila after how things were left in this book. This author is definitely the Queen of Cliffys and it’s going to be a torturous wait! * Written for Craves the Angst Book Reviews *

Wow! Just wow! I am at a complete loss of words! What an amazing ride. I knew from the moment I read this: "I'd TAKEN HER, but ultimately, she'd taken me. I'd tried to destroy her, but serendipitously, she'd destroyed me. This was the beginning of the end. Not the end of my feelings for her, but the way of my life, my world. Something would have to change. Something would have to give.... Someone would have to die." I knew I was in for one hell of a ride and what a ride it was. Second Debt picks up right where the last book left off. Nila finally knows the truth of the identity of Kite and is struggling with what to do with with this information. She is going to have to find a way to use it to her advantage. Now that the First Debt has been paid, we are left wondering what will be in store for us next. Is there any hope for Nila? She has grown so much stronger than when we first met her. Will she be able to prove the Hawks wrong and somehow win her freedom? Jethro Hawk is trying to be the son that he was raised to be or so it appears. He's tryin to "fix" himself, but is finding that his old ways are no longer working. He's quickly discovering that Nila is meaning more to him than he ever thought was possible. He tries, man does he try to be cold and stay in the darkness...... "I knew where he was. He was in the dark abyss--the depth of pain where he normally lived. Only in the darkness existed stars and comets and lightning bolts just waiting to shatter and shower us with light"-Nila As much as Jethro tries to fight it, he soon realizes that Nila may be his only salvation. As much as Jethro wants Nila to hate him, how can she hate someone who is just as trapped as she is? Jethro has somehow found his way into Nila's heart and if that wasn't bad enough, his own armor is cracking everyday. Little by little he is letting Nila in.There is a thin line between love and hate. Will love save them or will fear take over? "She wanted me. All of me. The twisted parts. The dark parts. Me. She was...peace. She was....sanity. She was....home."-Jethro Second Debt is dark, sexy, thrilling and frustrating. I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next: Would Nila finally get through to Jethro? Are we finally going to see who Jethro really is and what he hides behind is walls? Will Jethro and Nila's secret be discovered? What is the second Debt? All of these questions will be answered and more. The last few chapters....OMG!! There are no words. This book ends on one of the best cliffhangers I have ever encountered. I have soooo many questions, so many. As I said before this book takes you on one crazy ride and I can not wait to find out what is going to happen next!!! * I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

4.25 stars-intense, controversial: 4.25 stars-SECOND DEBT is the third installment in Pepper Winters’s adult, contemporary Indebted dark, erotic romance series focusing on a six hundred year old debt the Hawk family believes comes due with the first born Weaver daughter-and Nila Weaver is this generation’s payment. SECOND DEBT and the Indebted series is a dark, erotic romance with questionable situations and dubious consent.  Nila Weaver is a prisoner; a victim of a perceived debt that must be repaid with each successive Weaver generation; by birthright Jethro (Jet) Hawk is the man who has been tasked with demanding payment-a payment he is reluctant to take but one that is necessary for all to survive.  SECOND DEBT finds Nila withdrawing from the man who is now both her jailer and her lover-a distinction that becomes blurred as another debt must be paid. The premise of SECOND DEBT continues to be disturbing with graphic acts of violence, torture, emotional and physical abuse, and threats meant to frighten our heroine into submission. But Jethro hides a secret; a secret that if revealed will change the course of the debt, and one that will place Jet in as much danger as the woman with whom he has fallen in love. Nila will remain defiant until the end but the end will come sooner than anyone thinks. The secondary characters are colorful, psychotic, ruthless and dominant. The Hawk family continues a tradition of  extracting a debt payment for over six hundred years and in this Nila Weaver has become their latest victim.   Pepper Winters’s imagination takes the reader into the darkest recesses of our minds; there is no escape for Nila and no escape for the reader who becomes trapped when the story takes a prophetic turn and a debt must be paid. The heart pounding anxiety and stress of Nila’s imprisonment is compounded with an all-consuming need to see a happily ever after for the man who has been ordered to destroy Nila’s life.  I still contend that ‘capture bonding’ and Stockholm Syndrome are the psychological conditions applied to our heroine’s current emotional state and physical needs but in reverse, her jailer is a man who has become more dependent on his captive than he could ever have believed. Once again, the writing is brilliant; the topic controversial; and the characters are a perverse collection of dark and dangerous twisted beings.  The tragedy of Nila’s existence has been determined by birth; the odds insurmountable; and a payment that must be remitted in blood.   SECOND DEBT is an intense, emotional and alarming storyline that seduces you into reading until the very end.

Pepper winters is an incredible story teller. The emotions that she is able to bring forth in her writing will amaze the reader. The story of Jet and Nila and their struggle to survive this time honored debt of horrors without breaking themselves or each other will entrance you and keep you hanging by a tread. I find myself gripping my nook tightly as i turn the page daring myself to see what is next never knowing for sure as Ms Winters continues to spin a story so intense and woven with drama. This is not series you would want to miss, but just know it is also a story you will not be able to put down. If you have not read anything from Pepper Winters know this she is an amazing writer that does not fail to entrance her readers. Once you have read one of her stories you will then read them all. Once that is done you will sit not so patiently begging her to write faster as you are hanging on by your finger tips for her next words to fly off the pages and into your soul.

Second Debt has left me stunned.  I'm still trying to process everything I've read in connection with the previous books and with what may come for Nila and Jethro in the future.  The processing is not because things are unclear, but because I'm trying to figure out what hints Pepper gave us in the first two books that I missed.  Let me be clear, this book is fantastic but it will mess with your head! Nila, Nila, Nila.  It's not easy being her.  She's trapped in a living hell and she doesn't know why. Both she and I were hoping things would become easier with Jethro after they had sex, but it doesn't seem like that's happened.  She's gotten to know more about her past through small reveals but she's fighting between what she feels for the Hawks/their history and one Hawk in particular.  She's still wavering between Hawk annihilation and trying to make Jethro feel something for her.   I also felt like a little more of the mystery surrounding Jethro was revealed, while still keeping the majority of it hidden.  The slow reveals are torturous but in a good way.  I was also really surprised by the shift in Jethro.  His way of thinking is changing, especially in regards to Nila.  I like it alot.   Two characters who previously briefly mentioned in the books were introduced and each of them seems like they hold the key in finding out the remaining secrets.  I can't wait to get to know what it is these women want and their motivations.  It's clear one rules Cut and the Hawks with an iron hand, and the other has the greatest effect on Hawk.  I have my theories, but knowing how the story often goes, will be worthless by the end of the next book. Once again the story is flawless.  It's fast paced and will keep you guessing.  There are a few light moments between Nila and Jethro that made me smile and others that made me hot.  There were moments when I thought my heart stopped and I was both pained and gladdened by them.  I absolutely can not believe how Second Debt ended.  There's a huge twist and cliffhanger.  I absolutely can not wait to find out what the third debt is and read the book with the same name.   I've already raved about how much I love this book, let me rave a little about Pepper Winters.  I thought I had an idea of what was going to happen in this book.  I feel like Pepper looked at my notion and those of other readers, scoffed, and instead wrote a story that was nothing like we'd imagined but the story we, Nila, and Jethro needed.  And what she's written is infinitesimally better then anything my imagination could come up with.

On my nook the actual story was only 163 pages long. There was a lot of filler in this book and not much content. Honestly, not a whole lot happened until the last 30 pages. I went through this book in one day and now I will be forced to wait another few months for the story to continue. Considering the amount of content and action in the first two books I was extremely let down by the lack of story in this book. I was disappointed because I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books, looking forward to this one and now that I've finished reading it I just feel disappointed...especially because in my opinion, if I can finish a book in one day that should be classified as a novella, by no means is this a full length novel.

This series is more addicting with every book i read. At the beginning i was curious, appauled, fascinated...... now im in love! Jethro still has a hidden side im still curious about but this book did not disappoint, he LOVES nila......and nila, i LOVE her she is strong and her heart is his saving grace, the darkness in this series has just enough light to keep you routing for something good to come in the end, even if its bittersweet and sad at times.
