McCully shares in an author's note the facts and an excellent bibliography that back her up as she tells the fictionalized story of three boys who discovered the caves of Lascaux in France. NOTE the cataloging error though, The CIP page claims the book is nonfiction, but McCully's note begs to differ with that. As she includes made up conversation and writes that there were varying versions of this discovery, I respect her calling it fiction. And it's historical fiction at its best--well researched and telling an engaging story, replete with magnificent art that echoes the ancient drawings in the French caves.
