Reviewed by Melinda Hills for Readers' Favorite An archaeological discovery in an Egyptian tomb leads to the amazing story of a young princess who is chosen to reign as Pharaoh by three unidentified hooded figures. In Secret of the Mummy, Bjorn Street tells an amazing tale about the young girl Hatshepsut who is devoted to her father, the Pharaoh Thutmosis I. She follows him to learn what will be required of her one day to lead his kingdom. With the help of the High Priest Ani, Hatshepsut studies ancient scripture and practices elevating herself above her human form to attain the spiritual power needed to be a god on earth. Led by the Egyptian deity Amon, Hatshepsut transcends mortal boundaries and takes on the mantle of leadership in spite of tragedies, intrigues, and plots by jealous officials. This story is masterfully crafted by Bjorn Street to provide a vivid picture of life during the reigns of Pharaoh Thutmosis I and his daughter Hatshepsut. At a very personal level, Secret of the Mummy offers a sympathetic look, through the eyes of an enlightened leader, at the lives of the common people and slaves during this period. Hatshepsut does not see things from the perspective of a pampered, entitled queen but rather as merely one person among many others. She enjoys the friendship of her ladies-in-waiting, loves a commoner deeply, and has concerns regarding the conditions under which others live. The questions created by the discovery of her tomb and especially one particular artifact are puzzling to the ‘experts’ from all over the world. Street uses a tremendous surprise to provide an explanation and opens the door to even more unfathomable questions in this excellent book about intense love and selflessness.
I absolutely loved "Secret of the Mummy" by Bjorn Street. I've always been fascinated by ancient Egypt and Egyptology, and also have read some things about the ancient Egyptian Mystery Schools. Bjorn's novel chronicles the earlier part of Hatshepsut's life as she trained to assume the role of leader of Egypt, and the trials and tribulations she faced, as well as her coming of age in a beautiful romance. I found the spiritualism and paranormal phenomena to be particularly intriguing in the novel. Most people probably dismiss the paranormal activities in the Mystery Schools as "fantasy" or "strictly fiction", but there is a large body of evidence that suggests these activities DID indeed take place. Bjorn's novel made me feel like I was THERE in ancient Egypt experiencing these things, as if I was transported back in time. The romance in the book was also beautiful and captivating and almost poetic and epic, and in one place I actually cried. My one regret is I wish the book was longer and had more pages devoted to the romance. I read in Bjorn's bio that his novel was inspired by the movie Titantic. His novel IS grand and epic and has a cinematic feeling that I found engaging. I eagerly seek out reads that are not just cookie-cutter clones of the hottest trends, so I appreciate Bjorn's originality and "writing outside the box"! And the ending - fantastic! I won't say more!
