Secrets and Lies in El Salvador is the story of an American woman in war-torn El Salvador. It exposes death and destruction at every turn, but also validates the power of love, and embodies the gift of hope.

In her debut book, rising author Sherrie Miranda scripts a story that is not for the faint of heart. Miranda's narrative tightly interweaves fictional characters within historical environs that zeroes in on the plight of the poor ... A combination of cliffhanging chapter closures and unexpected scenes, Miranda's novel is certain to be a wonderful addition to Central American history collections. San Diego Book Review Magazine

This novel reads like a personal account ... that takes the reader straight into the life of the protagonist as she finds herself. There are elements of the confessional here, suggestions of reportage ... I recommend it to all who love good fiction with heart and soul. Stuart Aken, Author of Blood Red Dust and 11 other books

A firsthand journey into perilous El Salvador in the early 1980s, when the country is torn by a war between a rich landholder-controlled government and guerrillas fighting for the everyday people ... The narrative is emotive and involving, drawing the reader into what Shelly sees and feels. InD'Tale Magazine

Reviewed by Maria Beltran for Readers' Favorite Secrets & Lies in El Salvador: Shelly's Journey by Sherrie Miranda is a personal journey in war-torn El Salvador in the early 1980s when the country is ravaged by a fully-fledged civil war that lasted for more than 12 years. Extremely violent, the war resulted in the deliberate terrorizing and targeting of civilians by death squads, the use of child soldiers, and countless other violations of human rights. It is fought between the country's military, controlled by the rich land owners, and the guerrillas trying to protect the rights of ordinary El Salvadorans. In the midst of all this turmoil, a young American woman, Shelly Marie Smith, journeys to El Salvador ostensibly to take portraits of her family that she is meeting for the first time. Sherrie Miranda's Secrets & Lies in El Salvador is a powerful coming of age story. Evocative, mysterious and heart racing, this is a historical fiction novel that puts the reader in the midst of a country and family in turmoil. The story unravels with an emotionally strong and image-loaded poem by Roque Dalton, a Salvadoran poet, essayist, journalist, political activist, and intellectual. What follows is a fast paced turn of events that reveal the secrets of an El Salvadoran family caught in the middle of their country's violent fate. And in the end, the story takes a full circle as Shelly Marie Smith confirms her connection to poet Roque Dalton but the cost has been great. Author Sherrie Miranda is a master story teller as she weaves together a tale that is emotionally complicated using threads made of courage, hope and love.

Sherrie Miranda has written an intriguing story of suspense, betrayal and political upheaval. Her style of writing brings you into the situation as if you are there when it happens. Set in Central America, the story unfolds in a time of war, where there is little escape from the brutality of a fascist government. Taken from true events, the story captivated me, and I felt carried away by the romance and the bravery of the characters. But can their love and humanity triumph over the evil and the blind ignorance of the people around them? Read Secret and Lies in El Salvador and find out.
