Reviewed by Jamie Michele for Readers' Favorite In an ode to the polished and poised housewife, Alisa Schindler ticks all the boxes in Secrets of the Suburbs. Lindsay is everything she's supposed to be, and has everything she's supposed to have ... on the outside. She was raised in an upper-middle class home (with the usual tennis accomplishments one would expect), and married into the elite with a handsome doctor husband and two kids — naturally, a boy and a girl. She has the ideal house in the right neighborhood, designer handbags and plenty of money to stuff in them, and enough wine and Xanax to keep it all together. But there's more to this than meets the eye when we dig under the surface. Things begin to boil over when Lindsay imbibes top-shelf liquor and John, her friend's husband, enters the picture. It's never easy keeping things a secret in the suburbs, especially when a Facebook page is on a mission to out it all. Secrets of the Suburbs by Alisa Schindler is a delicious read. Schindler remodels the typical housewife story mold and takes the reader on a sexy, intriguing, and wholly engrossing ride. There is a cookie cutter picture of perfection that is almost instantly shattered by characters who are layered and thoroughly developed. The writing is straightforward and tight, and reading it feels akin to a conversation; a front-row seat in the recesses of someone's mind. It was exciting to watch the story unfold — and kind of implode — from the multiple points of view we're given. I recommend Secrets of the Suburbs to anyone looking for an enticing, provocative book written for lovers of all things Real Housewives.
