¿Secrets¿ the debut novel by Stacy D. Campbell is a story of the ages shining a light on jealousy, lust, friendship, love, and how these things cause secrets to be set free. Jasmine, the story¿s main character, is an accomplished attorney who agonizes over a three-year affair with her ex, Michael ¿ to whom she gave her virginity and love without knowing he was married. She struggles in relationships with her nosey, overbearing mother, aunt, and best friend/colleague, Lisa. Lisa, who is harboring deal-breaking secrets of her own, tries to hook Jasmine up with her man¿s recently divorced best friend, Allen. Fed up with the meddling and desperate for a sexual release, Jasmine calls Michael several years after she broke it off with him for a one-night stand. The whirlwind begins! Narrated from the perspective of the main characters, ¿Secrets¿ delves deep into the motives of a group of well educated, highly paid Detroit professionals. The writer conveys the familiar theme that secrets, no matter why you¿ve kept them, always find their way into the light. Sometimes these secrets break up friendships, break off engagements, and even cause people to break the law. The plots and sub-plots flowed together well and were not hard to follow. Ms. Campbell has a unique writing style and vivid imagination, providing realistic thought, emotion, and reaction to both her female and male characters. The story was good, leaving nothing to be desired in her storytelling ingenuity.
