Overview

Seducing Abby Rhodes: A Novel by J. D. Mason

The propulsive second novel in a new contemporary trilogy about unforgettable love, scorching desire, and dangerous secrets.

When Abigail Rhodes bought that old house she fell in love with in Blink, Texas, she got more than she bargained for. After being told by the local psychic that it is filled with a passionate energy from the previous owners, who died years ago, Abby decides to fix up her beloved house and reluctantly moves in. But ever since then, strange things have been happening in her newly renovated home, and Abby has been plagued with dreams that wake her up and leave her breathless.

After a tumultuous life these last few years, Jordan Gatewood is following what amounts to a trail of breadcrumbs in an effort to find a renewed sense of purpose. Searching for the truth about the man his adoptive-father really was, Jordan makes his way to the old house where his father was murdered, in Blink—and right to the petite, understated beauty that answers the door. It’s not long before Jordan realizes, quite unexpectedly, that Abby is the perfect woman for him. Jordan doesn’t believe in ghosts or fate, but he does know that the powerful connection he feels for this woman started the day he met her in that house and he is determined to make her his.

Robin is a successful Corporate Attorney, and was proud to be the lover of the most sought after bachelor in the state of Texas--until he abruptly breaks off their relationship, leaving her confused, heartbroken and bitter. When she discovers that he’s left her for another woman, a woman she considers beneath her, Robin is determined to teach him a brutal lesson.

A man like Jordan has too many secrets, secrets that, if found out, could not only destroy his relationship with this other woman, but that could also cost him the biggest business deal of his life, and possibly, his freedom. Robin is the last person he wants to go up against, and she will stop at nothing to get him back or to make him pay for his betrayal, even if that means unleashing those secrets. The question is, will Jordan let her? Or will his all-consuming obsession with Abby win out, in Seducing Abby Rhodes by J.D. Mason.

Seducing Abby Rhodes, J. D. Mason Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews Genre: Multicultural Interest.  I saw the synopsis for this, thought "romance" and as it had a great prospective nasty B itch female - I love those - I requested. It wasn't until writing this review I saw the Multicultural Interest tag.  I did notice after the first couple of chapters that Jordan isn't the usual white, well connected, Alpha male and thought then how refreshing it was to read of a male coloured lead. We see ladies of colour in romance, almost always gorgeous Latino types ;-) but I can't recall the last time I read one with a male lead. That's a shame, and bad in that it certainly doesn't fit reality. I was pretty ashamed too, that until then I'd just made the assumption that he was white. Says much for today's stereotypes and how they lead to unconscious bias. I'll try to work harder at avoiding it in future. I loved Abby, a real Lady and so hard working. My type of lead lady. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty, join in and work with her construction crew on the pull down and build up of her projects. As someone who loves to garden and usually has somewhat dry and scrubbed hands and nails, rather than elegant manicures that was good to read. The romance between her and Jordan takes place pretty quickly, and was really believable. Even though they are very different sorts of character, very contrasting backgrounds I could feel the pull between them. And of course when Robin got involved that was perfect for me. Characters like hers add so much fun to a story. I do wish there were more like her! Educated, gorgeous looking and determined to hang on to her catch, to do whatever it takes to me the next Mrs Xyz.  Of course there are always things in people's pasts which could be misinterpreted, and Jordan has a few more issues than most people. I really wanted to know the connections, the real story, and little hints kept being teased out but determining what was real, what actually happened wasn't easy and I didn't get it til the reveal.  The biggest problem for me in this story was when things did play out they felt almost anti-climatic, after all the big build up. It felt like there should have been more consequences, stronger reactions somehow, it just felt kind of faded, muted to me. Still, that's me, drama all the way is what I love, and I did like the way when things went wrong for Abby and Jordan that it was stretched out, given a good working over, not a two-pages-later-and-all-is-well solution. I like breakups to be solid, heartbreaking, to really wring at my emotions. I hadn't read any of the earlier books, and maybe if I had the revelations of the past would have worked better for me, knowing what happened, or some of it. I had a little trouble remembering who was whom at first too, and if I'd met the characters before that would have been easier to follow. Never the less this can be read as a complete read, a stand alone in its own right. One day I'd like to read the earlier books, I really like JDM's writing style and the types of characters she creates.  There is a very slight supernatural element here, a little ghostly action, people from the past interacting with those in the present, and that was fun, but a very minor part of the story.      Stars: Four, a enjoyable story with some solid plots and intrigues... I’ve always been a romance fan, but this is almost like romance on steroids, mixed with some paranormal as well as romantic suspense. Abby Rhodes, a construction worker/house flipper, feels at home with being on a construction site, but is still trying to find and maintain her feminity. She buys a house, unaware that in the past, there was a murder that took place there. While rehabbing the house, she comes in contact with multi millionaire Jordan Gatewood, whose family has ties to the house. Not only are they trying to see if their relationship will work, they have to deal with past spirits, one of which is Jordan’s father who was killed 30 years ago, Jordan’s manipulative mother, as well his ex girlfriend Robin (who is truly a piece of work) When I first found out that I was able to read this story, I was ecstatic, because I loved the first one, and so far every story I have read from this author. I was also happy to see some familiar faces, like Plato, Marlow and Shou Shou (She’s blind, but she’s also a psychic and a seeer ). This was a great and exciting read that kept me guessing until the end. I felt this is a must read, and I can’t wait for it to be released so I can read it again. Thanks to Net Galley for the read.

Jordan is rich, has secrets and history seems to keep repeating itself.First his father is shot, then he is thirty years later. Abby is a career led woman , devoid of a romantic attachment and just bought the house where Jordans father was shot. What follows is a chance meeting, paranormal happenings and some 'what goes around comes around' experiences for Jordan. This book has some strong characters, some characters that you can identify with and a general mix of the downright crazy. In all, this leads you through a story which you want to keep going with to know the outcome and whether romance and love will win through. At times I struggled to know who's perspective this was written in and would say that in the first few chapters this was the most difficult but to persevere with this and all becomes more straight forward. An enjoyable read. 3.5 stars

"Seducing Abby Rhodes" is an enthralling, supernatural mystery/romance. The book begins when Abby, who owns her own company purchasing and fixing up houses, purchases a house she felt drawn to, even though it's not much to look at. She soon learns that the house is haunted by people from events and people from the past. After she moves in, a handsome stranger shows up at the house, also having been drawn to it. Jordan is a billionaire head of a construction company. He keeps most people at arms length and is tortured by his own past- his father was shot when he was in college, his mother shot him a year before, and his wife killed herself in part due to his infidelity/inability to love her. When Jordan visits the house where his father was killed, he is drawn to Abby, the woman who has purchased and is restoring it. Together, they seek to unravel the past and "finish" what the ghosts are calling them to finish. Meanwhile, a woman Jordan was seeing casually, Robin, begins a Fatal Attraction-style obsession with him and seeks to destroy the love he has found with Abby. It's a thrilling and complex story that will have you gripped until the very end. Although the story is intertwined and full of mysteries, it is easy to follow and impossible to put down. I did not intend to finish this book as quickly as I did, but it pulled me in and wouldn't let go until we reach the conclusion. It really kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat! Overall, it's really a beautiful story and a wonderful journey- I highly recommend to lovers of romance and mystery (who don't mind a touch of the supernatural). Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

RATING 4.5 STARS Seducing Abby Rhodes is the first book I’ve read by J.D. Mason. I would classify this book as a mixture of romance, suspense, with a touch of paranormal which is what attracted me to it. Since I’ve never read anything by Ms. Mason before, I didn’t really know what to expect. What a surprise this turned out to be. It has a complex plot with plenty of romance to keep me invested. If I had one complaint, it’s that there were several players involved and it took me awhile to get everyone straight. Abby Rhodes is a house flipper living in Blink, Texas. She is thirty seven years old and has never really been in love. From an early age, all she wanted to do was play with tools. She does most of her work herself and takes great pride in what she does. She’d been driving past the little house in Blink for so long and finally couldn’t deny the pull it had on her any longer. She bought it with the full intention of fixing it up and selling it but the longer she was in the house, the more it felt like home. The house was long rumored to have some ghostly inhabitants. There was a history to the house, a murder occurred there. Abby wasn’t the only person who felt the pull to that house. Jordan Gatewood is a multi-millionaire who inherited his late father’s business and has since grown it ten fold. Jordan’s father led a life of prestige and power in Dallas. But he also led another life, a simpler life with the woman he truly loved, in a tiny house in Blink. This was ultimately the house that he died in tragically. For some reason, Jordan feels the need to reconnect with his father. It has been thirty years since his death. Jordan is nearly fifty years old and his company is on the brink of the biggest business deal of their lives. A deal that would change everything. Somehow his car found it’s way to the front door of the house that day and that’s when he saw her, Abby. That’s the day that everything inside of him shifted. “Sweet Abby Rhodes, country and funny. Kind. Pretty woman. She had no idea of the effect she was having on him. Abby changed him, brought him back to life, gave him a new sense of desire and purpose that had nothing to do with Gatewood Industries or money or power.” With Abby, Jordan could be the man he wanted to be, the man she deserved him to be. Abby didn’t want him because he was rich or important. She wanted him because she liked who he was, how he made her feel. “I will be your refuge, Jordan.” But there are more players in this story. Jordan had been seeing the corporate attorney at his firm, Robin. He made it known from the start that he was making no commitments. It was a casual relationship. But Robin saw things differently. And when Jordan ended things and she found out it was because he was seeing someone else, a simple country girl from a nowhere town, she was livid. And she wanted revenge. Jordan has many, many skeletons in his closet. Things that could ruin him, ruin his company. And Robin will rattle every one of those skeletons to get what she wants. There were so many players in this twisted bunch of characters. And I don’t believe any of them were free from malice, except perhaps Abby. She was the innocent in all of this, the pawn so to speak. Oh, and maybe Jordan’s personal assistant. I loved that woman. Even with all the darkness of his past, I still couldn’t help but to love Jordan.

Seducing Abby Rhodes by J.D. Mason is the 2nd book of a trilogy. I was not aware that there was a first book, but this read very well as a standalone. Abby Rhodes, our heroine, is a contractor and designer of homes, in her home town of Blink, Texas. Abby is drawn to a small house that has been rumored to be haunted. However, Abby decides to purchase the house and renovate it. What she is not prepared for are the ghosts that belong to the house since a murder almost 30 years ago. Her friend, who is a physic, tells her the ghosts seem happy she is there; so Abby decides she will move in temporarily while she is renovating. Jordan Gatewood, our hero, is a millionaire entrepreneur, who happens to be passing by Blink and decides to visit the old house where his father was killed. Jordan does not know why now he decides to stop into that house, but he is drawn to it. He meets Abby, as she is making her plans. He leaves after a short time to go home, but he cannot forget Abby. Jordan is also in the middle of major deal that will bring his company millions. Robin Sinclair is a high powered attorney, who works for Jordan; she is also his mistress. What follows is fast paced story revolving around the ghosts of Jordan father, and his mistress; the sweet slow built romance between Jordan and Abby; and the vengeance of a woman scorned. As Jordan cannot stay away, he and Abby begin to fall in love. In the midst of this, they want to understand why the ghosts remain, and since they cannot talk, it is a mystery that will slowly unravel. Jordan has only cared about work, and his relationship with Robin and other woman was never serious. Unfortunately, Robin has fallen in love with Jordan and is determined at any cost to break up the growing relationship between him and Abby. It is Jordan’s past concerning the suicide death of his first wife, and his mistress that will possibly prevent him from staying with Abby. Through all of this, we learn more about Jordan, his family and the murders from years before. We also learn how vicious Robin can be. Will Jordan give up Abby to prevent Robin from destroying him and his family? Will we learn what truly happened years before, and why the ghosts have not moved on? Will Abby find a way to keep Jordan? J.D. Mason has written an interesting unique mystery and a wonderful romance. Seducing Abby Rhodes held my attention from start to finish.
