Five hundred years ago with the invention of movable type a new symbol system was made available to Christians as to all in Europe. They hailed it as a means to bring to the literate minority God's word attested in the Scriptures. All alike welcomed the printed book as an advance in the diffusion of God's word. Some in the burgher class, however, began to set it in opposition, not to God's word proclaimed and commented on in speech, but to all non-verbal symbols of the unseen, Triune God.
