Overview

Seeking One Great Remedy: Francis George Shaw & Nineteenth-Century Reform by Lorien Foote

Francis George Shaw (1809-1882) was an American social reformer he eagerly embraced the causes of feminism, social justice for the working class, and other causes, but his major focus in his life was the cause of the abolition of slavery, a passion he passed on to his son Robert Gould Shaw, commander of the African American regiment depicted in the movie Glory. In her biography of the elder Shaw, Foote (history, U. of Central Arkansas) describes how he rejected his "preordained" place in the center of powerful kinship network of New England elites for a lifelong quest to battle against the extremes of wealth and poverty, class distinctions, and race and gender discriminations. She also describes how he used his kin network to advance his quest. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
