This is the book you're going to need by your side as you start to edit. This is not the book you want beside you when you write your first draft. If you did that, you'd soon end up in the corner curled up the fetal position. This writing reference will soon prove invaluable to you. You're not going to catch everything on the first read through, and you're certainly not going to end up using everything. At least, I know I probably won't.Be warned: This book will show you you are not as good as you thought, but helps you be as good as you should be.

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers is one of my top five favorite writing books. Full of writing examples, exercises and techniques. Will benefit most writers from beginner to advanced. A must-have for any writer's reference library.

Renni Browne and Dave King, both professional editors, clearly know what it takes to move a manuscript from "good" to "publishable." The checklists and exercises are helpful.

ALL YOU NEED. Too many novice writers, including myself, believe the more 'how-to' books you buy and, eventually, read, the better your chances are in getting published. I have bought countless books and spent hundreds of dollars only to realize the best way to write is to sit down and WRITE!!! Of course, a book on editing written by professionals in the field should be read, understood, and practiced. THIS IS THE BOOK. You need no other. KEEP WRITING!!!

A lot of succesful published authors could learn from this book. It's written by two gifted editors who worked for major publishing houses and edited writers like Erica Jong and Sol Stein. I'm a professional writer (nonfiction)and writing teacher with a master's in language arts and I learned more about writing fiction from this text than any other source. It can't give you what you don't have in the way of ideas or talent, but it can make your writing better, quaranteed, and help you avoid the kinds of 'errors' (or weaknesses, shortcomings, and distractions where the author gets in the way of the story) that authors like Jane Smily, Le Carre, and Ruth Rendell DON'T make but that some popular writers I've really enjoyed (like Mary Higgins Clark and Ridley Pearson) DO sometimes make. Applying Browne and King's techniques has made my fiction so much stronger and given me answers to questions I've had for years about how to show character's emotions without 'telling,' how to handle attributions and 'beats,' and other points of craft that can be learned. This is a wonderfully written, succinct, even brilliant book from people who really know what they're talking about. If my novel gets published it will be in large part because of the editing and final polish I was able to give it after studying this book. The first two editors and one agent I have approached want to read more chapters, and I think that's because of the improvements SELF EDITING showed me how to make.

This is the BEST book on editing I have ever read. It tells yuou some of the common mistakes the new writer makes and how to correct them. If you don't have it, buy it. It will be one of the best investments you can make.
