Winston Wong used to test video games but has left his downward spiraling career to follow in the footsteps of Encyclopedia Brown, his favorite childhood detective. When the Pennysaver misprints his new job title, adding an extra "s" to his listing, Winston becomes a "Seniors Sleuth." He gets an easy first case, confirming the natural death of a ninety-year-old man. However, under the surface of the bingo-loving senior home is a seedier world where a genuine homicide actually occurred. Winston finds himself surrounded by suspects on all sides: a slacker administrator, a kind-hearted nurse, and a motley crew of eccentric residents. To validate his new career choice (and maybe win the girl), he must unravel the truth from a tangle of lies.

I love mysteries. This one just kept going, in many directions. Like Winston and Kristy characters and their relationship. I worked as a nurse in LTC (long term care.). The elderly characters were so spot on to personalities I-have encountered. Please continue.

Dollycas’s Thoughts J.J. Chow introduces us to Winston Wong, a man trying to start over after his investments dry up and his sister bails him out by buying him a house to live in. He decides to become a sleuth like his favorite childhood detective. He is not licensed but takes out an ad in the Pennysaver to get his new business off the ground. A typo in the ad changes his plan just a bit. Instead of a Senior Sleuth he becomes a Seniors Sleuth and his first case has him investigating a death at an assisted living center. The author gave us the requisite quirky characters for a cozy mystery. The residents of the Sweet Breeze are certainly unique, from the bejeweled Anastasia Templeton, to the dapper gent who plays the piano, Jazzman, and the curmudgeonly amputee Pete Russell. Nurse Kristen Blake seems to be the only staff outside of the manager of the place who spends more time playing video games than spending time with the residents. This part of the story didn’t ring true for me. A place like this would be required to have more staff. The meals are delivered by Meals on Wheels and that was odd to me too. Maybe things are different in California. Winston’s first case starts out being just a small matter of easing someone’s mind but snowballs when he learns the man that died did not die of natural causes. Yet he kept stays on the case to find the killer. This was quite a mystery for his first case. This is a very light mystery with all the cozy elements. A really good first effort to start this series. I enjoyed it but some of the details held me back from loving it. I am interested to see where the author takes her Senior Sleuth next.

Reviewed by Trudi LoPreto for Readers' Favorite Senior Sleuth (Winston Wong Cozy Mystery Book 1) by J.J. Chow is an eccentric, unpredictable mystery story with delightful characters and a plot that will keep you reading. Winston Wong has given up his career as a video game tester and decided to become a sleuth like Encyclopedia Brown, his boyhood hero. His first case is to determine if ninety-year-old Joe Sawyer died a natural death or was murdered while living at the Sweet Breeze senior home. Winston soon finds a romantic interest and confidante in Nurse Kristy in his quest to find the truth. The residents of Sweet Breeze are a strange assortment of men and women whom Winston comes to think of as his friends.  Anastasia who liked pretending she was a princess, Jazzman who entertained on the piano, and Pete, a disgruntled veteran are among some of the folks we meet. Senior Sleuth takes many twists and turns before the case is solved.  Senior Sleuth is a mystery with a very different sweet, nerdy sleuth as the star with a great cast of helpers. I really enjoyed the book and it is hard not to share more of the story without giving away too much of the plot. J.J. Chow has begun a cozy mystery series with Winston Wong as the hero and I can’t wait for his next adventure to begin. I read this book in a day, neglecting my chores because it is that good a book. I found myself changing my mind several times about who the murderer was and who were the good guys, and never once did I guess the answer. I highly recommend Senior Sleuth. J.J.Chow has written a great mystery mixing seniors, video games and quirky characters together in a perfect blend.

This was a fun quick mystery to read and a new good series. I like how the author included a little humor along with the mystery solving. The characters were very fun and unique. There are just enough twists that you will find yourself guessing right up until the last part of the book. It was kind of fun to see the video game world collide the retirement world. These are two parts of the world that normally do not go together but the author did this meshing of the two in a nice way. This is a perfect book for you take to the beach for a good day of reading.

This is cozy mystery--the first in the series about a private investigator who is trying to get it right! According to his parents (he didn't become a doctor or a lawyer), sister (hey its his older sister) and even himself there has been very little in his life that had gone right. He had lost almost all the money he had when he invested it in a "sure thing". So now, license or no license he had to somehow become a private investigator. I mean really--the printers even got his business card wrong!! He put an ad in the Pennysaver and got a walk in almost immediately. It seems there was a death at a senior home and he was asked to please prove that it truly was of natural causes that the gentleman died. That was all fine and good--how hard could that be? Well--clues kept appearing that kept changing our private investigator's mind--and he really was determined to get to the bottom of this-his first case!! Will he, in his bumbling way, find out whether it was murder--will he get the girl (the first girl who ever took an interest in him--and will he re order his business cards with the incorrect version or the one it should have been? This is a cute read and you should enjoy it. There will be more in the series which I will try to read.
