The author is definitely not on a par with John Sanford, David Archer or Robert B Parker. The book is, indeed, "fast paced" but not "masterful", "fantastic" or "superb". Not a great plot and little suspense, but it is a quick read. Those who enjoy reading about brutality and violence will like it. For the rest of us it is just okay.

Shelby Alexander moves to Serenity in northern Michigan for a quieter life. He gets anything but. One winter night, he sees what appears to be a pile of rags outside his barn. Instead he finds a beloved, local retarded woman named Jenny Ellis. She has a head injury, exacerbated by hours in the cold and doesn't make it. The Ellis's are drug dealers. New competition and a new sheriff determined to bring them down inspired Harper to use his sister to deliver their goods. When Harper learns Jenny's dead, he pays ex-detective, Shelby $10K to investigate. He does not believe the sheriff's finding that she got lost and froze to death. Ellis's don't get lost. Shortly after Jenny's death, someone hiding in the woods, shoots up Shelby's house trying to kill him. He finds footprints from someone wearing shoes with a distinctive diagonal line though the sole. The author does a masterful job of weaving this story. I never guessed what was going on until I was nearly done with the book. I found "Serenity" a very fast read. I was halfway through before I knew it. You could easily finish it in an evening. A good storyteller, the author rounds out his hero. Shelby is 60, divorced and has a 30-yr old daughter intent on reconciling her parents. He is an ex-boxer, which comes in handy. His girlfriend is 30 years his junior, which infuriates his daughter. Shelby reminded me a lot of Tom Selleck's character, Jesse Stone. If you enjoyed that Hallmark series, you will really like this book, the first in a series. I found this book thoroughly enjoyable. A perfectly crafted, suspenseful story in which the author included everything necessary and nothing else. My rating: 5 stars.

This book would make an excellent movie. It is fast-paced, there’s a bit of sex, a bit of drinking, and lots of violence. Combine that with wonderfully developed characters and some witty dialogue, and it’s perfect for the big screen. Not only do you get lots of action and a mystery, but there are real connections between the characters. Shelby who is in his 60’s, and has not had a good relationship with his daughter, has to deal with her now wanting him talk to his ex-wife of many years. Plus Shelby has a new girlfriend who is actually his daughter’s age. While some might find that pathetic, or even creepy, I really enjoyed the relationship between Shelby and his girlfriend. I think she adds some spunk to the book, and definitely keeps Shelby feeling younger, and loved. There is also a great male bond between Shelby and a former cop, Mack. Mack is the type of friend who you want to have your back, especially when you’re on the hunt for ruthless meth dealers. Mack is also that friend who will get always drunk with you, and you can talk to about anything. Everyone needs at least one friend like that. A wonderful book all around, and I’m looking forward to the next one in the Shelby Alexander Thriller series.

A suspenseful and entertaining thriller… I found this story to be exciting and suspenseful from beginning to end. Shelby Alexander is a retired boxer who has also done some work as a “fixer” but is now looking forward to settling down to a nice, calm retirement in his hometown of Serenity. As it turns out, Serenity is anything but serene and Shelby soon finds himself in the middle of a drug war. Shelby accepts money from a local drug dealer to find out the details surrounding the death of a member of the drug dealer’s family who happened to die on Shelby’s property. This is not an employment opportunity I would have accepted but I do not have his background or skill set. The story then proceeds to take the reader on an action-packed adventure ride with twists and turns enough to keep you hooked until the very end of the story. This is a novella-length story which can be read in one sitting if so desired. There is violence but it is not overly graphic. There is coarse language (but that is not unreasonable given some of the situations the characters find themselves in). Overall, this was a very entertaining story that inspires me to continue with series.

Great Book. It’s always exciting to find a new Author that can grab your attention, with a thoroughly well written and entertaining story. It’s full of great characters, and a plot that I really enjoyed. Shelby Alexander is a tough, no nonsense character that you can’t help but like. I’m really looking forward to following him in the rest of this series. Shelby Alexander liked the quiet life, and that was exactly why he was living in a small town called Serenity. He didn’t have too many troubles in his life, and in fact for a man heading towards 60 years of age, he was doing remarkably well. Especially since he was seeing a woman 30 years his junior. However, working as a fixer had its ups and downs, and it certainly attracted some dubious types. So when a local girl collapsed in his yard, and it turned out to be one of the notorious Ellis clan, Shelby suddenly found himself being hired by her family, to investigate how she ended up in such a bad way. Shelby should have known better than to get involved with this family, as they were very bad news. Now he just had to try and stay alive. From start to finish this was a very enjoyable story. If you enjoy Thrillers, then this is certainly a book worth reading.

Ok as a first effort. Author needs critical feedback before publishing. Definitely not close to Robert Parker's skill level.

Good plot development, characters were believable. Good character and plot development.

No entertainment value here at all. Very unappealing characters in a blandly told story.
