Overview

Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf: With a Fully-Orchestrated and Narrated CD by Sergei Prokofiev, Peter Malone

THERE IS NO better way to introduce children to classical music than with Prokofiev’s musical fairy tale of the little boy (played by all the strings of the orchestra) who, with the help of a bird (played by the flute), outsmarted the big, bad wolf (played by the French horns). And now with this book and CD package, children can look and listen all at the same time. A new retelling by Janet Schulman follows the basic story, but with a kinder ending for both the big bad wolf and the argumentative duck. Peter Malone’s paintings have the luminous quality of old Russian masters. The CD, with music performed by the Cincinnati Pops and word-for-word narration by Peter A. Thomas, was made exclusively for this book and CD package.

I originally purchased this book for my 2.5 year old grandson who was really into the wolf. When I realized that Prokofiev was Ukrainian, I thought it would make a good 2nd birthday gift for my American/Ukarian great neice who was turning two. Both of the children have active imaginations and the music and pictures feed such kids. This is probably more suited to older children, but my grandson does understand the instruments. I hope it inspires a love of classical music in both. I play the French horn, so it excites my grandson that this is the voice of the wolf. The pictures are beautiful, also.

This book is one of the few great children's stories from Czarist Russia, and along with the c/d to give the story a great atmosphere, it's just like a tale come true.

My 6 year old grandson loved this book and attached CD. Good way to expose kids to literature and classical music at the same time.

The E-Book version seems to have no music. If so, it is not worth anything. Can't play on an I-Pad, despite Nook software. This should be a perfect application for this technology.
