Surely every dyspeptic American knows the routine by now: stop smoking; reduce caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and fat while increasing fiber in the diet. In addition, Hoffman, director of the Hoffman Center for Holistic Medicine in New York City, suggests that sufferers rule out food sensitivity/allergy, yeast infection, or parasitic infestation as a cause of gastrointestinal distress. He recommends an array of natural digestive remedies (chiefly aloe vera gel, bitters, and garlic) as opposed to commercial antacids, which he soundly condemns. Also host of a weekly radio show on medicine, Hoffman writes in a chatty, entertaining style. He reviews physiology, including some interesting trivia, and lists menus for stages of recovery from digestive upset. His basic message, however, is not a new one, but libraries with demand for the subject may want an additional title.-- Evelyn L. Mott, Palm Beach Cty. Lib., West Palm Beach, Fla.
