Severed Souls (Richard and Kahlan Series #3) by Terry Goodkind, Sam Tsoutsouvas

The direct sequel to the New York Times bestseller The Third Kingdom.

From the far reaches of the D'Haran Empire, Bishop Hannis Arc and the ancient Emperor Sulachan lead a vast horde of Shun-Tuk and other depraved "half-people" into the Empire's heart, raising an army of the dead in order to threaten the world of the living.

Meanwhile, far from home, Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell must defend themselves and their followers from a series of terrifying threats, despite a magical sickness that depletes their strength and which, if not cured, will take their lives...sooner rather than later.

I gave 4 of 5 stars because I loved it but would have liked a little more action and less walking and talking. That being said it was amazing and Goodkind has once again ripped out my heart and this time stomped on it also. In a good way. Even being as prepared as the author could make me without spoiling to much I still was shocked by parts and utterly devastated. Again in a good way. If you read SS, and I recommend you do, make sure you are stocked on tissues. READ IT!!!!!!!!

Someday, I hope Mr. Goodkind goes back to his roots of epic fantasy.  The series has gone downhill.  He has gotten wordy for the sake of being wordy, often repeating exact phrases multiple times throughout the book.

This book makes me hope amd pray that there is another. This book has so much left hanging at the end, which is my only dissapointment in the book. It was truly heart breaking and well read as I finished it in a day and a half! :-) I  can't wait for more from Terry!¿

I've been a huge fan of the sword of truth series. That being said, I have mixed feelings about this book. Overall, it was a decent book, not his best work. Don't know why but I was hoping there was a death spell cast on a certain someone. But if that were true, they wouldn't have remembered the persons name so that went out the window. Hope this isn't the last in the Richard and Khalan series.

I love the way he continues the character development and relationships. I have followed these characters for  half my life and I have never regretted it. This is an amazing continuation of their story. I hope there is MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I adore Terry Goodkind's writing, and Richard and Kahlan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Highly recommend this book!!!!!!!!!!

If you are a die hard fan like me, please read. If not, don't waste your time. The book had potential but did not live up to it. So not to give away any spoilers, those of you worried about the next book ever happening, please read The Law of Nines. At least one of Kahlan's offspring will live on. Besides, the story is not yet resolved and we know from the law of nines that Richard and Kahlan lead the world into a golden era. With what is happening at the end of this one, there is no golden era.

This is one of the worst books I have ever read. I wanted to say this was joke and wasn't even written by Goodkind. There was absolutely zero feeling in the story, and his attempt at horror was pathetic. I am used to his previous works where he can induce tears and out-loud laughter. There were chances for some truly epic scenes, but they all were flat. Momentous things happened, but it was like no one even cared. This book left me completely empty. The plot is slow, the writing is wordy and dispassionate, and the story itself lacks his usual flare. I actually feel like I wasted my time reading this book, and it makes me hurt inside. I am hoping that Goodkind redeems himself in the next installment, but I wouldn't bet on it.I have never been so disappointed with a book by a favorite author. The Sword of Truth series is my all time favorite series and I am utterly ashamed that this book belongs to this series.

Terry has lost his edge in writing and like the rest of the latest story it does not come close to the previous series.  It seems he just killed off characters for the sake of getting people interested and no real purpose.  In reading the new books I have to wonder did Terry have someone else write them while he put his name on them.  If you love the characters and Terry's old style, don't read this book

One of the saddest and heart breaking endings ever.  Her champion has fallen indeed.

The stuff that happens in this book blew my mind.

My heart is shattered in pieces after reading this book.  Just when you think the hero will find a way through  the despair going on goodkind throws in a agonizing twist at the end. I have been reading these books for over 14 years and I have to tell you I'm forever hooked and this book is no different . It left me on the edge of my seat, and crying in despair by the end of the book..

About a year ago, I read "The Third Kingdom".  It was the first Terry Goodkind book I had read, but it had me interested enough to start the series from the beginning.  Since them I have read every book in the series.  Some have been better than others, but by and large they were all good enjoyable reads that made me anticipate getting the next book.  Maybe it was because I had to wait 2 months for this book to be published and I am accustomed to reading them cover to cover and picking the next one up the same day, but I was disappointed with the short span of time this book covered, the limited detail of the interaction of the characters or the almost total lack of development of seemingly important characters before they were killed off with little warning and even less explanation of their previous unknown, but intrinsically important back story.  While i sometimes find myself of the opinion that Terry Goodkind takes several pages to state and explore moral and ethical arguments that would be just as effective and noteworthy, if half the words were used, his overall writing style appeals. His abrupt and dismissive removal of seemingly important characters with formidable  talents that have put the hero and his entourage in disadvantageous situations (in irons in a magical dungeon)  with little effort lead me to believe that someone else has deemed that brevity is more important than the story. An epic story with bigger than life characters, "Severed Souls" reminds me of a Reader's Digest Condensed Book. I hope the next volume is more reminiscent of Mr. Goodkind's previous efforts.

So many feels in the book.  I hope there is another. If you have read the past books, you have no reason not to read this one. Go READ THIS!

This book was the worst I have read. I can't believe Terry Goodkind wrote this. The dialogue was long winded, predictable and amatuerishly written. The repitions and reiterations were very annoying. Richard's character was nothing like in the first 14 books I have read. Kahlan was more annoying and sillier than usual. This book didn't touch the greatness of the other books. I am very disapointed.

I have missed these characters! This book is very emotional and definitely worth the read, but it must go on for the sake of the world of life!

My mother, my kids, and myself used to discuss how we liked this series. She died in 1996 and terry is still writing the same tired drivel with all the unnecessary back story. Endless, mind numbing dialogue, it is painful to realize that this magnum opus has made him very wealthy. Other writers turn out better stories on a faster turnaround schedule. After waiting for the reslease of this, I and many other readers are not just disappointed, but angered that he would have the nerve to publish this rambling collection of letters and words. Ten thousand monkeys with typewriters just might do better.

Those of us reading this book do not need you to have so much filler in it. I complain because this filler is mostly backstory and repetitive descriptions of characters and mobs. I have read most of your new releases within 48 hours of purchase, yet I can't seem to force myself to endure this piece of work. I will manage, eventually, to finish it but I am bit looking forward to it. Very dissappoointed in this book.

Terry Goodkind is a genius, atleast were creating a griping story is concerned. I absolutely will have a hard time waiting for the next book in this series! I won't spoil the story but 2 major characters die and I cried for both. How gripping the emotion are and the shock of the surprises are of Terry Goodkind quality (meaning very exceptionally good) As we have come to expect Mr Goodkind gives us the terrible prophecy that seams utterly hopeless and he makes it come to pass in a way thats totally unexpected! Lets just say that the next book can go 1 of 2 ways as far as I see it and both are really exciting although I, like everyone other fan will be hoping for the better of the 2 outcomes.  As to the critics who may need to be reminded that Terry Goodkind writes death in a more realistic fashion, just because a major character dies doesn't mean it has to be a huge dramatic end. Dead is dead as Mr Goodkind often reminds us. I'm still a huge fan and I can barely wait until I find out what happens next. Keep up the great work Mr Goodkind!

I have read every book of the series from beginning to end. I purchased this one right after release but it took until now to read especially after the spoiler alert. The story is a slow pace but picks up near the ending. This one is very emotional and leaves you expecting more. I believe the true fans of the series will read the book no matter the reviews and spoilers that they have heard or read.
