About the Author

Kaylin McFarren is a rare bird, indeed. Not a migratory sort, she prefers to hug the West Coast and keep family withinvisiting range. Although she has virtually been around the world, she was born in California, relocated with her family to Washington, and nested with her husband in Oregon. Besides playing an active role in his business endeavors, she has been involved in all aspects of their three daughters' lives: taxi duties, cheerleading coaching, script rehearsals, and relationship counseling, to name but a few. Now, she enjoys spending free time with her two young grandsons and hopes to have many more.

Although Kaylin wasn't born with a pen in hand like so many of her talented fellow authors, she has been actively involved in business and personal writing projects for many years. As director of a fine art gallery, she assisted in furthering the careers of numerous visual artists through promotional opportunities in national publications. Eager to spread her creative wings, she has since steered her energy toward writing novels. As a result, she has earned more than a dozen literary awards and was a 2008 finalist in the prestigious RWA® Golden Heart contest.

Kaylin is a member of RWA, Rose City Romance Writers, and Willamette Writers. Receiving her AA in literature at Highline Community College originally sparked her passion for writing. In her free time, she enjoys giving back to the community through participation and support of various charitable and educational organizations in the Pacific Northwest.

Inspiration behind the story:

Kaylin has been involved in the business of collecting and selling Asian antiques for more than a decade. Because of her interest in this field and her fascination with the undersea world, she was inspired to write a story about the recovery of a Chinese concubine's cursed treasure from a sunken ship, which aids in healing a woman's damaged soul. Kaylin spent four months researching scuba diving, trade routes, famous battles, and natural disasters that befell Spanish galleons from the 15th to 17th centuries. It is her hope that this action-adventure romance will entertain readers and honor the dedicated salvaging and exploration companies that have contributed remarkable discoveries and cross-sections of history to museums and institutions around the world.

Kaylin McFarren spins a terrific tale of adventure and deceit in volume 1 of her ‘thread series,’ Severed Threads. Chase Cohen and Sam Lyons plunge from the safety of their dive vessel, Stargazer, into the cold and dark waters of California’s Pacific Ocean. If Chase’s calculations are right, he and Sam are about to resurrect a fortune of a lifetime from the wreck of the Wanli II, the Ming Dynasty emperor’s lost dragon ship. Deflating his buoyancy compensator vest, Chase follows Sam further down the length of Stargazer’s anchor line. Once at the bottom, the men swim beyond their own anchor line on a mission toward the Wanli II where their fortune awaits. The occasional fish and an eel or two doesn’t deter the men from forging forward. The universal diving rule is to never lose sight of your dive buddy. When Chase takes his eye off Sam for what seems mere seconds, Sam is nowhere to be found when he looks forward once again. In a matter of moments, the two men’s destiny would change forever and more importantly, while two men dove into the bowels and depths of the Pacific, only one would return to its surface. Four years later, Rachel Lyons, the daughter of Sam Lyons, rushes to the museum director’s office. She has a meeting with Dr. Ying to discuss a grant application. However, it’s not some random application. Rather, it’s the application to fund the team of divers who plan to resurrect the fortunes of the Wanli II. The magnitude of the discovery would bring international recognition to the museum, city and community—just what the economically distressed community of San Palo needs. To fortify his argument further, Dr. Ying reminds Rachel of her departed father's passion toward being the one to retrieve the treasure before his untimely death. The mere mention of her father is unsettling. Rachel is immediately distracted from her thoughts when the uninvited interruption of one Chase Cohen bursts into the office. Imagine her horror when she learns the lead diver on the team will be none other than Chase Cohen—the man she believes holds the sole responsibility for her father’s untimely death. Kaylin McFarren launches a tangible nuance of a quest for treasures and the perils of piracy and of what lies in the depths of the deep, dark sea. Her savvy dive language and nautical knowledge infuses credibility into this wonderfully fast-paced story of mystery and adventure. The action is palpable with many layers ranging from innocents to drug-dealing gangsters who all play a significant role in the mission at hand: find the sunken vessel and its lofty treasure that was lost to the sea centuries ago. McFarren isn’t stingy with her words when it comes to setting the perfect scene that lends way to rich dialogue and edgy banter between characters Rachel Lyon and Chase Cohen. The storyline is captivating in that it doesn’t drag to the point of predictability. Rather, by the end of this delicious body of work, the reader will be left with one last thought: I hope she is working on the next installment of her ‘thread series’! Well done Ms. McFarren! Quill says: Severed Threads is a great adventure of hidden treasure and the journey toward its discovery.

I received a free paperback edition of this novel from Goodreads, Kaylin McFarren, and Creative Edge Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all, for sharing your hard work with me! This was an interesting, fast read, and an enticing variation of California fiction, involving as it does maritime aspects of SOCA living. The relationships across the cast of characters was entertaining - just when you think you have it figured out you are proved wrong. At times the action becomes almost frantic, and everyone is wearing so many hats that it is wearying, but an entertaining read all the same.

Chase Cohen treasure hunter and Rachel Lyons ex-boyfriend is back in town after running off after her fathers death years ago. Rachel wants nothing to do with the man who broke her heart and even less to do with the sunken treasure that her father died chancing. When her brother is kidnapped by a drug-dealing gangster she has no choice but to find someway to pay off her brothers debt to keep the both of them alive. And that way comes in the form of working with Chase to uncover a sunken Chinese ship carrying a precious treasure above that is just the thing she needs to free her brother. Can she overcome her fears to save her family and come out with her heart still intact? An action-packed adventure that was fast-paced and fun to read. There was never a dull moment with the suspense, romance and tension throughout the book. I enjoyed the characters and loved reading about their journey. I loved the different twists and turns the story took I never knew what was going to happen next. If you enjoy heart-pounding action and fun adventure I recommend picking this book up.

I really enjoyed this book; to me it has a little bit of everything for all readers. It has lies, deceit, romance, treasure hunting, fighting, and of course some good ole lovin hehe. I also have to say the author does an amazing job at capturing the reader’s attention from the very beginning and keeps it, which is very difficult, but she does it with ease by giving little hints into the mysteries of the novel, and not giving too much away at one time like I have experienced before with many writers. I will say some may not enjoy how the writer ends pretty much every chapter with a very small cliffhanger, making very difficult to stop reading. This book also gives the reader some back stories of legends that also are extremely entertaining and there is also a ghost element that I liked since it did not come off as being cheesy or too farfetched, but I do like the paranormal stuff so forewarning that there is this element since some may not like it. Ratings wise I would give this 4 out of 5 stars..... Wait what? Didn't I just say I loved the book?!? Why only 4 stars?!? The reason for this is the one negative I have with this novel and that is the ending to me feels rushed and things not fully explained. Like there is a scene where you find out Rachel has a stalker, and that whole situation is ever fully explained, you find out that the dude is married but stalking her and doesn't want his wife to find out.... and this left me like "huh?". Then Allie's miraculous recovery goes unexplained, but the biggest is after the bog ending fight is weird and feels rushed and confusing. As well as I will say the "cliffhangers" I raved about so much at the beginning of the review does muddle some of the ending and does at first cause some confusion that can upset the reader, since you read Chase is pulled from the ocean and is alive, but then a few pages later the author confuses you when Rachel overhears by the police that another captain has been claimed. If the ending was developed more than this would definitely be a 5 out of 5. Also this is volume 1, so there will (hopefully) be more coming in this series and in the epilogue it does end with the promise of a new exciting adventure, but also note that most things are explained and wrapped by to the point you could read this as a standalone novel, so for those not into series you can still enjoy this novel too. I truly cannot wait to see what the next volumes bring and to see how each character develops, especially the rekindled romance between Chase and Rachel.

This book was heavy on a thrilling mystery with a touch of romance and a feeling of time is running out. After the death of her father, for which she blames herself, her relationship with Chase fell apart. As a new opportunity to find hidden treasure comes along, Rachel is on board with the idea until she finds out Chase is involved in the project. However, when her brother is kidnapped and she needs the money to get him back it seems as though she has no choice but join the crew. The story was a little hard to get into but as Rachel grew as a character, the story became more interesting. You have to admire Rachel, who has the courage to face her past to move forward. I love the integration of the Chinese myth the author pulled from for the story of the sunken ship they are investigating. Overall, it was a great read and the second book should be a great addition to the series.

WOW just WOW this is just volume one and i’m like blown away! This author had blown me away! She knows how to get you into a story and to keep you there! The mystery in this book was stellar as the author gave us little clues along the way to help us figure out the story. That paired with the love interest this book was just so good. I really felt for Rachel and her withdraw from the world. Blaming herself for her father’s death is not an easy thing to live with. This was a great story about empowerment about not letting past mistakes take away your life. I love how Rachel grows throughout this story and I cant wait to get my hands on Vol.2 If your looking for a new author to fangirl over this is the one you want! Thriller, Mystery, and Romance! Its got it all!

This book is about a woman trying to save her family and learning to forgive her father that died searching for his dream. In present day she is faced with terror and villains that have caused many twists and turns in her journey along with a former love that was there when her dad died. The cover art grabbed at me from the second I saw it. It was very fitting for throughout the story. This story has everything that a person would want. There is lots of action, pirates, kidnappings and love stories that stand the test of time and oodles and oodles more. The characters were very easy to get to know. It flowed from one event to another seamlessly. This is definitely a book geared toward adults due to the graphic sexual content in places and usage of some swearwords though. Had that not been in it, I feel it would have made a great young adult to adult book that both boys and girls would like with all the adventure and action. The usage of history and details that were researched were written in very well and made the story flow instead of stall. The elements of fear that the characters faced, although were there and added to the story, were toned down so that they would not cause nightmares in the readers. It also sets up for a continuing story if the author chooses to do so. I put books into four categories like most other readers I think do. 1) Keepers- These are ones that I will go back and read again and again like Nora Roberts “McGregagor's”. because they are like old friends. 2) Library/Thrift store donations- These are books that I liked to read once but they were not keepers. 3) Chuckers/Fire starters- These are books that after the third chapter if I was not into the story they got chucked into the fire bin. I have only found about 5 of these in my whole 30 years of reading , not counting what I had to read in school. 4) Sharers- Share with others about it because it was a great read. This one was a strong #4. It had a great story plot that I know many friends of mine would love to read and enjoy it. I could see reading it to my kids as a night time story only I would edit out the sex scenes. It is a great stormy night read!

I quite enjoyed this novel, the first book in the Threads series. I was compelled to read the novel as I saw it had won a lot of awards, and I am always on the lookout for standout authors that I have never heard of before. The story has a nice balance between suspense, mystery and romance and the pacing of the story is great, so you feel compelled to read on to find out what happens in the next chapter. The writing is decent, with few errors throughout, and while the story is a little complex and inconsistent at times it remained an engaging read overall. The author uses wonderful descriptive passage to bring the characters and settings alive, without it being too overwhelming or flowery. Although the storyline contains a lot of imaginative adventures, the characters read as being believable and relatable in a broad way and you get a good sense of who they are, what their motivations are, and why they respond to events as they do. The writing is generally good, and I was pleased to find an author who was previously unknown to me who knows how to write a pleasing read with a fairly decent plot. The book would be ideal for a summer read, and for readers who love a novel which has romance, suspense, mystery, adventure, and a little bit of paranormal activity thrown into the mix.

Severed Threads did not disappoint! A mystery, action, romance novel all in one. Rachel Lyons withdraws from everyone and everything she loves doing after her fathers death. She feels guilty over the last conversation she had with him and feels betrayed by the man she loved when he suddenly disappeared after her fathers death. 4 years pass and Rachel is approached my a museum director to help find the buried treasure her father was searching for on his last and fatal dive. Rachel is reunited with Chase, the man she loved, when she discovers he will be the captain and leader of the diving expedition. Rachel was going to turn down the project until she discovered her brother had been kidnapped by gangsters and they were demanding payment. Rachel jumps on board to find the treasure so she can save her brother. She found so much more on her adventure than just buried treasure. Kaylin McFarren is a brilliant author, I felt like I was transported to another world the whole time I was reading! I literally couldnt put it down. I read the entire book in one day! The cover art is great too. Going to start reading book 2!

Severed Threads by Kaylin McFarren is a beautiful story that combines exciting elements of murder, mystery, and thriller into a literary gourmet that readers will devour with delight. Rachel Lyons has successfully found a safe sanctuary working in a foundation office, hardly able to stop blaming herself for her fathers fatal accident while diving. The museum director needs her to help Trident Ventures in retrieving a cursed relic that has been buried in a sunken Chinese merchant ship. The decision could be easy to make but she isnt sure anymore when she discovers that her ex-lover is involved in the adventure. Her mind is made when her brother is kidnapped and a heavy ransom demanded, but the stakes are higher than she could ever imagine and she is about to realize that shes been lured into a very difficult situation. The action in Severed Threads is breathtaking, the setting mesmerizing, the characters compelling, and the plot absorbing. Yes, you'll finish reading this one-of-a-kind tale before you even remembered you ever started. Kaylin McFarren knows how to create powerful characters then put them into very dangerous and tight situations. How they manage to get out is where all her genius comes through powerfully. The plot moves fast, propelled forward by the intensity of the conflict, the gripping subplots, and the engaging dialogue. This is the kind of book that will satiate the literary taste of millions of readers.

I was asked to read Severed Threads and give and honest review. I purchased the audiobook for such a great price I couldn't resist. This is the first novel I’ve read/listened to by Kayline McFarren, and I just have to say is WOW! There was so much action at every turn I was on the edge of my seat! When I thought the story was going to go one way, NOPE, it redirected and completely went another. It was brilliantly fantastic! I loved everything about it; I am moving on to the next on ASAP. I just have to note that John Jaret as a narrator, superb. I kept thinking there had to be a female narrating Rachel Lyons character, no, just John. Severed Threads is and incredibly fast paced treasure hunting adventure that will keep you on the edge of you seat from the first page. Throw in a little romance, drug dealers, ghosts, ship wreaks and a plot for revenge and it leaves you in a constant state of anticipation, waiting for the next chapter. I absolutely loved it and give Severed Threads 5 Boundless Stars....Sara

If you want to read a book with twists and turns...this book is for you! I love the way the author makes you feel like you are living Rachels life!!! Rachel Lyons, the main person in this story is so lost at first. I can connect and really feel the pain that Rachel is feeling! I have had a similar (not quite as dramatic) situation in my life with my father. I would definitely give this book 5 stars!!! If you are going to read it, hang in there and keep reading! The last three-fourths is an amazing ride! Kaylin McFarren, thank you for this amazing book!

The first book in a three book series that is a romantic thriller about ex-lovers diving into the depth of the sea in search of a sunken ship from China, a relic and save the life of Rachel Lyons brother. The title of the book is what caught my attention before the cover did. It is the typical generic romance cover that works since the imagery is in the book itself, and this book is well written. It gives details without being wordy. The characters are colorful and quite enjoyable to listen banter back and forth. I enjoy that is set around archaeology, which opens up a whole new door unlike anything else I have read in the romance genre. There really is not anything I found to dislike in this book. It kept me entertained, kept me guessing and kept me asking more. The author gives just enough information that in order to find out the rest you have to read on. The chapters break up about events that are going on, from start to finish, introducing you to new characters that tie in with the big picture. This is a fantasy thriller that would be good for pre-adults and adults that like adventure and exploring a bit of history.

This was such a great read! It has everything a book lover could want, Sunken treasure hunting, romance, Pirates, mobsters and even a little hint of an ethereal being and with all of this the book still remains believable! I thoroughly enjoyed every page and could not put it down. It starts off fast paced and continues that way throughout the whole book. The characters in this book are wonderfully written and I instantly fell in love with them. The storyline is amazing and the story of Mai lei and the Dragons heart treasure was captivating and heartwarming. This book makes me want to grab some scuba gear and take some lessons! I give this book five stars and highly recommend it. Rating: unputdownable!

A Fast Paced Read, Packed with Action and Adventure! If you are a fan of good romance/suspense books then this book is for you. The author has done a fantastic job with this book, it is impossible to put down. The romance is sizzling, the chemistry between Rachel and Chase is off the charts! This is so much more than romance though, the plot is full of mystery, intrigue, twists and turns, and suspense. There is so much action, and excitement, definitely a gripping, heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat ride. It will totally keep you guessing, it did me anyway. The author has written this so well, very descriptive, intelligent, full of incredible imagination. All that combined really draws you right into the story, and holds you there until the very end. This book is everything promised in the blurb and more. I definitely recommend it, and can't wait to read the next in the series. I will definitely be watching this author, I can just feel that she has so much more to offer.

This romantic story is also full of adventure, danger, and mystery. This book is a delight to read with surprises along the way. Chase and Rachel's story has intrigue as their lives are caught in the search for the lost Chines merchant ship. Will their love be rekindled even with all the mysteries and lies? This book was well done and draws you into the treasure hunt and the discovery of a real treasure. Look for more books with Chase and Rachel to read more of their treasure hunting adventures.

Severed Threads was a truly fascinating story. I found the adventures of Chase and Rachel and Devon very engaging. The adventures of treasure hunting unfold in a satisfying way. This salty tale of love, loss, and buried treasure will not disappoint! The bad guys swarm and seemingly get the upper hand. Undercover agents surprise time after time. Romance reignites slowly over the course of the story. Rachel and Chase have real depth to their characters. Secrets unfold delightfully with every turn of a page. I completely savored this story. It had everything from pirates and adventure to mafia and sizzling romance. It even had avenging ghosts! I cant WAIT to read the next book in this series.

Severed Threads by Kaylin McFarren is not your yet-another-romance/suspense novel; it is the Punch-in-Gut, Edge-Of-Seat and One-More-Page kind of read. Kaylin McFarren has used her talent of business to encourage and develop many creative lives and Severed Threads is her version of creativity incarnated. The book is written with anger and frustration author felt towards world but the journey of writing it brought her to the level of understanding and calmness. There is much pain in the world which needs healing and Severed Threads is an attempt to sooth it in very literal sense, as the proceeds from the sale of this book to go directly to colon cancer research department. Without giving much of the plot, the book revolves around the idea that with courage and determination one can outdo/outperform any obstacle that may get thrown in their way. And when the bets are against the lives of your loved ones the only thing to do is NEVER STOP. Just like the famous words from John Green, "I'm not saying that everything is survivable Just that everything except the last thing is." There are many things to look forward to in this book like the chemistry between protagonists Chase Cohen and Rachel Lyons and the whole adventure which is marked against time. I personally didn't liked Rachel much and the book cover keeps giving me creeps every time I looked at it, but I suppose that's the whole purpose of it being a suspense novel. Severed Thread has received many awards in categories ranging in Fiction, Romance, and Suspense etc... And surely deserves 4 out of 5 points and is a brilliant read. The language used is very lucid and easy to follow and takes you right into the story. Lastly while reading it if you think you know who the bad guys are think again... :)

Severed Threads: I absolutely loved it. It's a great story that gives you a little bit of everything. Murder, drama, secrets, lies, kidnapping, betrayal, undercover agents and romance. Oh! And a run of the mill stalker. The Sparks start flying in chapter 2 and don't stop from there. By the end of the book, your heart will be pounding! Salvage diver Chase Cohen knows that he's on the brink of his biggest find ever, but his run of "bad luck" keeps getting worse. He needs funding and fast. Enter in Rachel Lyons, the girl he's been in love with for years, but left four years ago. Her current employer is thinking about funding his little operation. Now he might get a second chance to win her heart, or maybe all his luck has run out.

Severed Threads by Kaylin McFarren is an exciting story that includes legends, lies, ghosts, mobsters, sunken treasures, murder, and love. Rachel and Chase have history but they put their differences aside to salvage the treasure of the Wanli II, a Ming Dynasty emperor’s lost ship. Legend has it that it has riches beyond the imagination and Sam, Rachel’s father is on a mission to find it when he dies in the process. He was a healthy, so how could he possibly die from heart failure? Now it is four years later and Rachel and Chase team up to finish her father’s dream. Rachel is at first hesitant to assist Chase but changes her mind all of a sudden. Is her change of heart genuine or does she have a hidden agenda? Follow the action as these two, along with Chase’s crew, fight murder and deception to claim what is rightfully theirs. Devon, Rachel’s brother, is in love with a woman who is someone other than she claims to be and it takes all the principal characters in this page-turner to keep everyone alive and well. The action in this story is fast paced and there are twists, turns, and revelations that kept me up late into the night reading. The suspense is contagious and when long time relationships come to light it just may blow your socks off. The ending is kind of predictable, but who can resist two people falling in love? I recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery and love mixed with the supernatural. This is the first book in a series and I already have the second one because I must see what the future brings for Rachel and Chase!

When Rachel’s dad died during a diving expedition, she cut all ties to his diving partner Chase Cohen, who left town with no explanation. Now, four years later, Chase is hot on the trail of a 400-year-old sunken ship, and needs a grant approved from the foundation that Rachel works for. She initially refuses to help him, until her brother Devon is kidnapped, and she is the only one who can save him. But as they get closer to finding the treasure trove, they meet danger at every turn.  This was a true mystery. I didn’t know who to trust, and where the twists were going to take me. To me, everyone was suspicious. I enjoyed getting to know most of the characters as their personalities evolved. Loving the water, I could imagine each fish and ocean scenery as it was described. Also the author did a fantastic job of relaying the excitement of the adventure, as well as the danger.

Not bad, but has a lot going on. This is an interesting mystery / romance type story that centers around deep sea treasure. The story begins with Chase diving with his mentor Sam in search of the dragon’s heart. The dive does not go well, and Sam dies as a result. Soon after, Chase and Rachel (Sam’s daughter) break up. Fast forward four years. Rachel has a job where she helps people find funding for diving and is asked by a Dr. Ying to give him money to fund a dive in search of the dragon’s heart. Unknown to her, Chase is still looking for it and has been for four years. She denies Ying help at first, wanting nothing to do with the very thing that was responsible for her father’s death. Later, her brother Devon is kidnapped but some people he owes money to some unsavory people. They hear about how Rachel is somehow involved with the search for the dragon’s heart and kidnap Devon, to use as leverage to force her to get them the fabled treasure, which is worth a lot of money. To save her brother, Rachel finds herself forced to work with Chase, her ex and only love of her life. They soon find themselves at each other’s throats, yet at the same time, can’t quit thinking about one another. Also, while conducting the search for the lost treasure, Rachel suffers from nightmares, dreams that are so realistic, she does not even realize that she’s dreaming. At this point, everything builds up to a suspense, and steamy end, and I don’t want to give it away. The writing is simple and easy to read. It keeps your interest enough to continue reading the book. There are some fragmented sentences, and sentences that were broken into two when they should have remained as a single sentence separated by a comma. My only other complaint is the over use of adverbs. Okay, this is more of a pet peeve of mine as I find then annoying and useless and a lot of modern authors rely on them to spice up their writing. I call adverbs the amateur writer’s addiction and wish people would use them less. Again, this is just my opinion. I just suggest that the author try to find a more descriptive way to write when she wants to use an adverb. Overall, the book isn’t bad and the story is engaging enough to keep you wanting to know what happens next.

The first book in the Threads series, Severed Threads introduces us to unlucky Chase Cohen, a salvager who spends his time underwater treasure hunting, and Rachel Lyons, the daughter of a salvager who is determined not to rekindle a relationship with Chase, as she holds him responsible for her father’s untimely death. However, when Rachel is forced to help her brother get out of the clutches of criminals, she and Chase team up to find fabled treasure Heart of the Dragon, hidden somewhere in the wreck of the Wan Li, a legendary Chinese ghost ship, and a gamble as to whether it actually exists or not. In Severed Threads, author Kaylin McFarren does an excellent job of setting up a back story both of the fabled treasure ship and its supposed curse of Mae Li, the unrequited mistress of a sea captain, as well as the spark between Rachel and Chase. She weaves in many secondary characters well, but the focus of the story is clearly how they find each other despite obstacles. I love the character development, particularly as it relates and sets up the next book, Buried Threads, which brings them even further into Asian tales and culture, inspired by McFarren’s knowledge of Asian art and antiques. I think this will be a well-written series where it is easy to lose yourself in the descriptive tales of antiquity and modernity.

“Severed Threads” is a romantic, unpredictable suspense novel that focuses on the hunt for a long-lost, almost mythical ship from the Ming Dynasty—the Wanli III. As the novel opens, Sam Lyons and his colleague Chase Cohen are on a dive trying to locate the ship, and Sam suddenly and mysteriously dies. Wracked with grief over losing one of the only men he’s been able to trust, Chase also finds himself having to break the news to Rachel—the woman he loves. Four years later, Rachel has distanced herself from diving and from Chase, until he suddenly reappears in her life under the form of Trident Ventures—the search for the ship is being funded again, and Rachel finds herself pulled into it and into the line of danger. At the same time, her brother Devon makes a foolish (and criminal) decision to get closer to the woman he loves, Selena—and when he is kidnapped for ransom, Rachel finds herself facing danger from all sides. The only one it seems she can turn to is Chase—but she can’t bring herself to trust him again. I recently read “Buried Threads” (the sequel to this book) and really enjoyed it, and I’m glad I went back in the series to “Severed Threads.” This novel does a good job of maintaining suspense while developing its characters, with frequent action above and below the surface of the water. Rachel is vulnerable and a very likeable main character, and you feel her grief and pain over her father, as well as empathize with her desire to do one last thing to honor him. The slow unfurling of her romance with Chase is both sweet and exciting, as Chase is a genuinely good man who cares for her but also very attractive, and they definitely have sparks. In regard to the plot, it’s pure adventure and I deeply enjoyed the treasure hunting aspect of it, as well as the twist of supernatural that comes along in Mai Le’s ghost. I would recommend “Severed Threads” to readers who enjoy romantic thrillers that go a little deeper than just focusing on action and mystery, and instead take the time give the reader complex and enjoyable characters.

First off, I don't want to admit that I judge a book by it's cover... but I do. This cover looked intriguing to me so that is why I chose to review it. I read the first chapter and wasn't too sold on what was going on. But I continued on, to really give it a fair chance. The more I got farther into the book, the more complex the story line became, and it was just too confusing to follow. Between scuba diving (in which the author explained in great detail, which was a plus), a past love affair, a kidnapping by people who seem to be mobsters, buried treasure from long ago and ghost stories, I think it's just too much for a reader to process. I felt like there wasn't even a chance to connect with the main characters (Chase and Rachel) because the story was taking me this way and that way and all over the place. Some parts of the book were well written, just not the entire book as a whole.  Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary electronic book from a website (in which I was told not to post the name of). I was not required to write a positive review, only an honest one. The opinions I have expressed here are my own. ~ItsAllGeekToMe
