Overview

Shades of Blue

Best known as the fire-breathing foil to Lyle Lovett in his venerable Large Band, big-voiced Francine Reed steps into the spotlight on this solo album that ably showcases her gifts. "They call me…ample," she confesses on the "Little Red Rooster"-ish "I'm a Handful," and from the cocktail jazz of Arlen and Gershwin's "The Man that Got Away" through the Memphis soul of "I Have a Right to Know" and neo-boogie of "Wrong Man for the Job," Reed proves it's her talent that's tremendous. With a deep chestnut contralto weaned on gospel singing, she excels at humorous phrasing ("What kind of piece of Chevelle is this?" she sneers in the drag-race burner "455 Rocket"), yet Reed can expertly bring a mournful, deliberate, yet gorgeously tuneful reading to "I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues." Though she didn't begin recording solo work until she was 47 years old, Francine Reed is clearly in her prime, and fans of blues, soul, and jazz will hopefully find more and more of her to like. Ample, indeed.
